Lastest trick of the sodding hippo (2001 td4 auto).....

drives fine for a while then for no reason it looses power and won't accelerate, gets stuck at around 2,000 to 2,500 rpm and stays there, even with the foot to the floor.

Change down, higher revs, still no power.

Leave it for a few minutes, half a mile, stop at the lights, whatever, at then its fine again.

Anyone any idea?

If I invest in a Hawkeye would the issue show up, of do they not work on pre 2004 TDs?

On top of the buggered diff and the jatco box issue, now this...... its getting close to being sent to the big greenlane in the sky!!!!

Turbo? variable pitch actuator does get stiff

Any smoke?

it could be the MAF sensor or the low pressure pump ?

Delamination of hoses or turbo modulator/valve black box on td4 a known issue

Look for 70mph power loss thread

Before you go thinking about buying a turbo -

check a few things first ...

Check all hoses ... As you look at the engine the large pipe on the left rubs on a screw head and the 90 degree one on the right splits underneath like someone has used a Stanley knife on it.
If they are both intact then they could have collapsed inside.

You can get them for about £25 from most LR parts suppliers.
The BMW filter is a good mod as it decreases the risk of a blockage and engine pressure build up which wont help the turbo seals.

Give it a good service as it will make a big difference i.e fuel filter, air , oil, BMW cyclone.

okies, been out and had a look.

90 degree hose is ok, its been change once, a while ago. The intercooler to engine hose is ok, this has been changed also, while I have had the car. It is showing some wear as it rests on the engine, but its surface denting for now.

The turbo to intercooler hose looks ok, well the bit that I can see.

I have just been out and removed pipe 1 on the turbo solenoid. this made the issue happen all of the time, no power about around 2,250 rpm. Although the bottom end (MAF rpm range) was fine.

new info -

took the number 1 pipe off and cannot feel any vacuum on the tube from the silver donut.

reved the engine to about 3000rpm, the tacho needle bounces from 3,000 to 2,500 and up again and down again and up again, etc engine revs up and down erratically.

This what it does when it changes up gears.....Looks like it my not be a jatco fault.

Changed the actuator, no difference.

Have noticed that it throws some black smoke out the back end when it hits 3,000 rpm.

It a puff of black smoke and pop like a miss fire, then revs drop off to 2,000 - 2,500 rpm
