Intermittent grinding noise on rear drivers side wheel.

Help pls! Got this very load scraping/grinding noise coming from what seems the rear drivers side wheel?
Not all the time but every so often but when it's happening it's quite loud!
There's nothing stuck between the dirt guards and brake discs, when it's happening it gets faster the faster you go and slows down when I slow down. If I turn left it stops and turn right it gets worse.
I have noticed a couple of times when I stop then set off it seems like there's a slight bang or knock on setting off? Best way I could describe this is like a handbrake on a normal car is stuck on then as you set off, bang it comes off?
Can't jack the Landy up at tho mo as I've yet to buy a high lift jack, but am getting one this weekend!
Any ideas would be really appreciated!
It's a defender 90 with a 2" lift and discs on the the axles.

Was hoping its a wheel bearing, in previous experience I've only had cars not land rovers and the cars tended to hum rather than grind?
I'm a bit new to defenders but can't help but love them!!
Anyone know if it's a massive job?
Thanks again for the help grimmer!

Jack up the rear end take the wheel off remove rubber cap, remove circlip ,take out the five 17 mm bolts remove drive flange , use a 52mm socket remove first nut ! Use a screwdriver to bend back the locking collar! Take second nut off, and spacer then pull hub off with bearings !! Replace bearings and seal rebuild as per the Haynes manual you should have already purchased !!!!!

Quality guys thanks!!!
Oh and Haynes manual was ordered and posted today so hopefully it'll be here tomorrow lol
Looks like I know what I'm on with at the weekend!
Thanks again!!

and dont use a hi-lift to do bearings, get yourself a decent bottle jack and just lift under the axle/diff.

Hi-lifts are bloody dangerous, i have one but only for use off road and for recovery, if you use it for maintenance you will spend a long time jacking up the chassis waiting for the wheels to come off the ground and then its not the most stable thing for taking a wheel off. Please buy a bottle jack and some axle stands as well and do it that way.

oh :welcome:

all the advice above is great if you have a pre 1998 defender. A TD5 wheel bearing is slightly different.

You can use the old method but LR in there wisdom changed the way they fit a wheel bearing from the TD5 onwards.

Right laugh! Cos my defender is an 86 reg but the axles have been changed to ones with discs on the rear I've no idea which wheel bearing to buy ! Lol
My thinking is I'm going to have to strip it down and try and get the part number off the old bearing and order a replace my that way!

Just an update!! Fixed and it was the bearing ! Also needed a stub axle it had gone that bad!!
So many thanks to everyone for the help!!!!

good news dirty..
that bit about hi lift jacks?
hope you used either a bottle jack under the axle of the wheel you work on, but its so much easier that way.
me/ got 3 trolley jacks I use, plus huge blocks of wood - two car ramp hight, and one large enough to place my biggest trolley jack on when the disco is actually on ramps-
makes it all so easy..

glad you overcame and are in the new learning curve matey..

That's the great thing about Land Rovers. most things can be unbolted and replaced. As per Easye1, my favourite aids for working under cars are offcuts of floor joist. They're also slightly soft so you don't dent the underside or take the paint off as you might with metal axle stands.

;)
good point that.
I also got a lexus, thats got a scissor jack that never been used, as your supposed to jack it up on the bottom of the sills,
noooo dont do that, use a trolley jack and your soft wood trick under somewhere tougher..
