I've got a weird problem with my D2 TD5. For no 'apparent' reason the engine temp seems to creep up to about 75% with a subtle loss of power only for the temp to drop again after about 2-3 minutes to its normal half-way mark and the engine power returns.

No fault codes are being logged and I can't replicate the issue.

Has anyone else had a similar issue or point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hi, if you have diagnostic tool watch the coolant temperature live reading when the symptom occurs, if there are spikes in the reading the problem can be on the circuit or with the sensor, if the temp is slowly rising and dropping around 120*C you have a cooling issue. You should know that the gauge stays at the middle between 70 - 119*C and goes to the next level at 120 and once left the middle the ECU cuts fuelling to protect the engine .... though if that happened the electric cooling fan should have been on if it's not dead

Sounds like a sticky thermostat to me.
As if you have overheated at some point.
what happens is some of the wax leaks out so the stat opens late.
I'd change it and then see if that cures it.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a run with the Nanocom connected and see what's going on.
I think this shows the diff between you, a computerist and me, an old skool mechanicalist.
I'd just take the stat out, give it a good dose of look-see then prolly just replace it.
Best of luck with whatever you find!!!:):):):):)

What's the deal with TD5 thermostats with regard to expensive genuine ones vs aftermarket ones?
I have yet to change one so don't know.
I tend to go for mid price stuff usually, but if you post this as a separate thread I'm sure peeps will come on and tell you which ones to avoid.
If they are just simple wax-stats, there is F all to them. So I can't see why the price should vary much.
what have you found so far?
