Can anyone help? I have a 1999 TD5 Defender 90 station wagon and have, after some fiddling got the interior lights to work, but they stay on for at least 5 minutes after closing the door! How is this delay adjusted?

Best idea is to get rid of it entirely.

Do you NEED the interior light to stay on after the doors are closed?

Can you risk a flat battery if the timer fails?

One of the lights in my TD 5 Disco (the middle one) is controlled only by an insane gnome hiding under the dash. As I NEED to be able to put ALL the lights out with several doors still open (when I am out shooting foxes), the answer was to take the bulb out. Ridiculous that LR reckon they know better than me when I want a light on.

Need interior light as am in and out feeding daughters 4 legged friend in dark farm yard and like to see getting in and putting saddles etc in back, can turn them off at switch but would like to get them working properly.

I keep my interior lights in the off position unless I need em. I've seen a few TD5's with flat betteries after the interior lights magically turned emselves on due to water ingress or earth problems.

I think it is timed by the Body Control Unit.

It may be possible to use a Nanocom or Hawkeye to set the timer.

Hmmm..... I wonder who would know that?

Yes.

Hopefully someone can tell you before then but if not I'll have a play.

Hi Mr Ratty

we need to be careful with this guy - look what crimes he confessed to:

Wow, nasty, u shud be chuffed that after a process of elimination I ended up in a land rover! (at least for dirty work and off road have lovely new vw 4by for day job, everything works on it! ESP go pedal)

Was just thinking, cud my interior light problem be caused by missing door switch on passenger door?
It might, if the wires reached the bodywork .

Rave for a Disco says

Interior courtesy lamps
To determine when to provide an interior courtesy lamps enable output, the BCU checks the following input
conditions:
l Ignition state.
l Transit mode.
l Driver’s door open.
l Passenger or rear door open.
The courtesy lamps operate at full brightness when they are first switched on. The BCU then gradually dims the lamps
(fade-out) before completely switching them off. Fade-out occurs over a period of two seconds following the logical
control signal to turn off the lights. When a door is opened, the BCU provides earth paths from the interior lamps, the
load space lamp and the ignition switch illumination. The following table lists the courtesy lamps operation and
duration for holding the lamps on that occurs after the BCU has detected a condition that signals the courtesy lamps
should be switched on:

Control signal Additional conditions Duration
Door open - 10 minutes
Unlock signal from remote transmitter All doors closed and ignition switch not in position III - 1 minute
Unlock signal from the driver’s door lock All doors closed and ignition switch not in position III - 1 minute
Ignition switch turned from position II or III to
position 0 - All doors closed - 1 minute
Door changed from open to closed All other doors closed and ignition switch not in position III - 15 seconds
Ignition switch in position III - Timer cancelled
BCU receives a lock command - Timer cancelled
Vehicle has transit mode enabled - 15 seconds on all occasions

It seems to me that you should either replace the missing door switch or carefully insulate the wires so they cannot reach metalwork. This should make the BCU think the door is shut and restore timings to LR's "normal" ones.

I'm taking mine in tomorrow (99 td5) to have the alarm (or lack of checked out) - was going to ask them to check why the light stays on so long and sometimes doesn't come on in the first place - just assumed it was all to do with the dicky alarm, so it's good to know that they all take ages to go out. I'll feedback if anything helpful comes up.

It looks as if the light WILL go out eventually. (apparently after 10 minutes in a Disco TD5) if for example a door isn't shut fully. or if a door switch becomes faulty and sends a "door open" signal to the BCU.

The Defender system is probably similar but for all I know the timings may be different.

From what you say there, a dodgy door-switch would be my first suspicion.

Beginning to think that with the door switch missing the wires have dropped down and are earthing hence bcu thinks door is open, then after 10 mins it turns it off.
Will go fishing for the offending wire over weekend and see if that cures it.
Thanks Charlesy great help. Don't suppose you know how to wire eBay central locking to the alarm so that either present alarm zapper opens doors or new clc zapper arms/ disarms alarm?

The last 3 digits of your 10as alarm ecu need to be 280. If the last 3 are 270 like mine you will need to either fit a 280 or midify it.

The central locking wires go to pins 2 and 3 on the 10as alarm unit.

I checked my defender interior light with my Nanocom earlier. I can't change the time they are on for but I can change the setting from 'smart' which is what mine is currently on, to 'normal'. I'm guessing that smart turns the bugger off after 10 mins and normal doesn't.

No problem.

I reckon you need to find that wire, and tape it.

I see Mr Ratty knows about your second problem.
I can tell you, I don't.
