just rang admiral to tell them i will be swapping my TD engine for a tdi. and they said unless the engine is identical they wont insure me! so now i am going to have to hope this engine lasts till october! and leave the 200tdi sat on the drive! :-(

i cant cancel it cos il loose my no claims, and most land rover insurers wont insure me till im 21 (end of aug).. bloody BALL ACHE!

I think I would call them again and ask to speak to someone more senior, possibly in customer service and not sales, and be armed with the relative performance data of each engine. I can`t see on what logical basis they could come to that decision, if it was N/A versus turbo I might just about understand it but not two turbos (even if one of them is a TD!). It would be worth checking the insurance groupings of each, I`d be surprised if they were that different.
I think they might either have taken a policy decision without really understanding it or be misunderstanding the nature of the modification ( or both).
I`d also be very surprised if cancelling invalidates your NCB, though it might well work out expensive in terms of returned premium (i.e. not much returned).
A chat with a good specialist broker might also be a good idea, even if you are not yet 21, they might have some good suggestions. I think Adrian Flux do a discount for forum members so they might be worth a call.

Im 20 and my series has been sat on the drive for 2 months now, cant afford to repair it quickly but can cancel insurance for same reason you cant.
 
Cheers guys. Last time I rang flux they were offering 2800... I think not.!

I think I will call nfu or Lancaster and see if they can offer advise. I was speaking to customer service! The guy went and spoke to his manager for about 15 mins then came back and said no! Does anyone have the tech data to hand of the two engines?
 
I'd expect my premium to go up too, not just disregarded! I think i will try and argue the case that it's their fault the policy is being cancelled so shouldn't loose my no claims.
It's bloody annoying I kno that much...
 
some folk just dont insure modified cars period

admiral being one of them - they are cocks.

think the idea is a modified car is more likely to fail as anyone can stick an engine in.....doesnt mean its done right ! - i guess they see it as you could just swap engine - not worry about brakes and other bits and pieces. i remember seeing my mates doing some horrendous conversions on 1.2 novas with 2l red tops on standard brakes and chassis.....

i too am with admiral and have had to hold off on the 200tdi i had lined up .... fortunantly im 25 so flux is insanely cheap for me !
 
If Admiral have taken a policy decision not to underwrite mods then you might not get very far BUT I would start by looking at the insurance rating of the TD versus a standard 200 TDi (what used toi be called the insurance group). I`d be surprised if there was much in it, even though the 200tdi is more powerful. If they are comparable then the only objection can be to the fact of modification - in which case an engineers report confirming the integrity of the conversion might placate them?

I'm 20 and with NFU, their quotes have been very reasonable so far, my 1989 90 has a 300tdi in it and they are fine with that, i've had it insured with them since i was 17.

It's insured as having 2 inch lift, larger tyres, soft top, earlier doors, snorkel, disco axles, side exit exhaust etc.

They also said i was allowed to fit a rover 3.5v8 into my series 3 when i was 17 with no increase in my premium so long as it was the same one fitted into a stage one (ie factory fit to a land rover of similar age/spec)

Also try adrian flux, last november they quoted me £100 less than NFU and that included a 6 point roll cage that i'm still yet to fit. the only reason i stuck with NFU is that they give me 3rd party cover to drive any vehicle as well :D

Only problem with the NFU is that as a young driver, your parents or grand parents need to have a policy with them, wasn't a problem as mum and dad had their cars insured and also the house.
 
I am with footman james, on a workshop policy, just shy of 700 fully comp and breakdown. They have no trouble with mods, and charged me the same.
 
Think I will give James a call if they don't use no claims. My dad is gong mad now cos the oil leak from this td has just sped up twice as fast so it's leaving a fair sized puddle everynight on this nice Tarmac drive! (not that a 200 will be any better, but that's what I keep telling him!)

Do James have a min age limit?
