Hi

I have looked all over but can't seem to find an answer to this.

My car insurance has no exclusion that I can see relating to its use off normal roads other than taking part in motor sport events such as trials. I am assuming that byways and other publicly accessible sites/routes count as public roads for the purposes of insurance so that if I stuff my shiny disco into a tree there need not be an excess of tears. But... is that a safe assumption?

Also, suppose I go to a pay and play event on private land - possibly a quarry or farm site or Forestry Commission land. What is the position there? Should I get explicit cover for something like that?

Pete

Greenlanes *should* be covered by a standard motor insurance policy, but check the small print. My insurance is from Highway and has an explicit section about cover for greenlaning/land rover shows etc.

Pay and play events are at your own risk...

UCRs, byways and Welsh RUPPS are highways and normal insurance applies.

You are unlikely to be insured for driving offroad.

I happened to have to call my insurers today (Endsleigh) and asked about use off-road. The woman I spoke to said my comprehensive policy would cover it but I don't think I was clear enough in the question.

Not only do I want some hope of compensation for a stuffed car, it would be comforting to think I would not be sued to the underpants by some poor innocent bystander or passenger.

What do you guys do for cover for these kinds of events?

In the magazine adverts, there are sometimes mention of cover for shows and such. Is this special, additional cover or part of a policy? I will have to ring round a few I guess. Can anyone point me to an insurer who understands?

Highway Insurance are specialist Land Rover insurers, but you will have to ring a broker who knows about them. I went through SureTerm direct, a few others on this forum have gone through other brokers and we've all ended up with the same policy.

£138 plus brokerage fees, recovery etc. Fully Comprehensive insurance, 6000 mile limit, full cover for greenlaning, shows, exhibitions etc, and this is on a modified 90 with Range Rover running gear.

As for competing, serious off roading etc, you are pretty much on your own here - I know when I go trialling that if anything happens, the buck stops with me and my credit card :(

do you have a link or telephone number for highway insurance?
id love to get cover for that amount. i could get the disco back on the road for that sort of money.
