I was thinking of changing the inlet valve seals to reduce some blue smoke.

the neat trick of using string without removing head appeals

has anyone tried this on a diesel, and does it work ok by inserting the string in the glowplug holes rather than injector,

what sort of clearance is there at tdc between valves and top piston is there which leads to how long a piece of string /diameter

thanks

if its diesel theres little clearance if at tdc so no need of string

thanks James that sounds even better, is there any tricks for compressing spring to get collets back in, i have a spring compressor but normally these used with head removed.

Changed the valve stem seals on my 2.25d when it was fitted a few times without removing the head or using string.

As stated the piston are very close to the head/valves at TDC so no need.

I made a compressor that worked for me bit of a fiddle but doe-able.

The end was made from a very big washer it sits on the valve and you use your body weight to push down on the valve...leaning on it with your chest...its padded with foam to stop it digging in...both your hands are free to pick out the collets

I didn't have one at the time...but I do now...one of thos little magnets on a telescopic stick for retrieving things...very handy...at the time I just used point plires to fish out the colets.

Although I always found that the pump timing being slightly retarded was to blame.

Nick.

I bought the bergen type only £14 delivered
i had tinkered with pump timing a few years ago but it runs fairly sweet set as is, starts first time, cylinder pressure about 430psi warm.
if off road going down hill slowly on tickover then accelerate thats when lots smoke comes out, it does have other symptoms like when warm it will hiccup frequently with a puff of smoke, with filler cap off it does not seem to breathe heavily but on a long hard run it will impressively blast oil out of filler cap all over bonnet, underside, rear door and windows! i will have another go at timing

"it does have other symptoms like when warm it will hiccup frequently with a puff of smoke"

Classic sign og very slightly retarded pump timing...it will start fine..its not enough to cause a starting prob...the pump will need turning toward advance no more than 1mm.

The breather blowing oil out...is it the type where the breather is on the rocker cover????

Its. Got me, pipes clear, mesh in cap free of gunk, perhaps loose push fit had tried fitting o ring to cap no difference. OK when not driven hard

I'm not familiar with the later engine...but on my 2.25d it was a push fit into an O ring...but held with a small bolt.

Not the best setup...I used to add some black RTV as well...it was very dry then...has your got the small bolt.

Well got the valve tool , genuine valve seals arrived from lrseries in plain bags no numbers on them , are they same for exhaust and inlet, how do you tell difference between those costing 30p and 3 quid

Steve

different stem diameters ,and orginaly only inlet had a garter spring as inlet is under vacuum ,exhaust pressure
