The age old question: does it make sense to take off and clean the manifold while doing the EGR delete job? I was set on it until I saw this thread: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/cleaning-inlet-manifold.304992/ The large photo here makes me think the whole idea is not very smart:

1) if it is this dirty, will it really make much difference to clean the manifold?
2) if it is this dirty, won't some of this gunk be pushed into the engine while refitting the inlet?
3) if it isn't this dirty, then will the cleaning make much difference?

Also is it only the inlet manifold gasket that needs to be replaced while doing this job? It seems to me that this job has more potential to cause problems than to actually make things better.

What do You think?

once exhaust gases stop entering manifold it will clean it self over time, its only oily soot that will gradually get washed away with oily air passing through it

James, thanks for the encouragement :)

Marmaduke, did they fail the Disco on the CO composition or just noticed the physical absence of the EGR unit?

Sad to hear that You didn't pass, but glad it wasn't because of the emissions. The mechanic who works on my Defender suggested to install the blanking plates in between the hoses, so it won't be visible, but as the MOT guys have never looked under the bonnet, I'm gonna go for the removal, though I will keep them safe just in case.

Another thing is gonna be the de-cat: I've ordered the straight through exhaust pipe and it may be noticed as the inspection from underneath the vehicle is always pretty thorough here. I still hope it will go unnoticed as Defenders are considered somewhat exotic here, so hopefully will be taken as normal.

Also wanted to give some criticism to paddockspares for not including the EGR cooler blanking plates with a TD5 kit, that is definitely not the cheapest: http://www.paddockspares.com/def-td5-egr-blanking-silicone-hos.html. Had to purchase two plates with screws in addition, not too happy...

Guys, need some clarity on the following issue: Do I need to get the ECU reprogrammed after the EGR deletion? I have a 2006 TD5. Most people say no, but people who work on LRs say yes. I can't figure it out if they are simply trying to get easy 200 euros or this is needed to get the ECU working correctly. THANKS!

no you just blank the egr

Neilly, You are right about the cooler - only late TD5s have them, and even those late ones have exceptions (non-Europe?), but I still think that for the price they could have included two small SS plates with some screws and gaskets. It probably costs close to nothing, but is an inconvenience, as lots of the buyers at Paddocks are amateurs and don't know that their model with the cooler needs those additionally. In my case, I ordered them and later noticed they had only one plate - so had to order from another place and wait longer. At least they could have mentioned that in the description. But maybe I'm just too demanding :)

James, thanks for the reply! A local shop that also does some work on Defenders offered to do the blanking for 30 euros and rewriting the bits in the ECU for 200 euros :D I will do the EGR with my mechanic and then see. Hope You're right:)
