started the strip down today for new seals, washers and harness.i wrote the injector codes down 1 at front back to 5.plugged in nanocom to check codes i had to ones stored and they are completely different.
do i leave alone once done or change.been like this for the 3 years i have owned.15p engine fitted now was a 10p still got msb ecu.

Discovery 2 TD5 2002. This weekend I removed the injector cover and checked the codes on the injectors(green). I found that on one injector the last 2 letters were swapped around. Another confusing thing was that there were not 5 letters stored on the ECU but only 4(Hawkeye). This was the case on all 5 injectors. I punched in the correct codes and found that 1 injector was now reading up to 17 where it was 7 before. I thought the correct codes would improve the cylinder roughness readings by making them more equal. Also confusing is why was the engine performing well and light on fuel(10.8km/l on average 110km/h)?

Hi, the coding will not affect idle and that's where the roughness it's relevant, what about the loom? is it in good shape? no oil in the engine harness plug or ECM red plug?, did you check the injectors bump clearances while you was there?...cos that's important too

I did not check the bump clearances. I expected that the person who did the engine up would have seen to that. The loom was apparently replaced about 26 000km ago. There is oil on the plug just under the harness plug. My next guess is that the harness is faulty.

if there's oil in the harness plug the loom is gone, if an aftemarket was fitted 26.000km is more than they used to bear, the only serious option in this area is genuine ... if you dont DIY insist on te injector clearances to be double-checked

What can one read into the fact that the readings are so wayward(peaking at -17 for a portion of a second) when idling and within more acceptable limits(+0 to +2, -0 to -3) when the engine is at about 2000rpm under normal load?

when I had readings so far out on injector balance it was an injector going bad, I replaced with a set of known good ones and all were within +/-3.
But I would change injector loom first then redo reading

I changed the injector harness this weekend, but the readings are exactly the same. Seems to me I will get to the bottom of this with the last thing that I do. Will probably be when I replace my number plate light. I also managed to drop a washer. I did not see where it went but it could have been between the injectors. Gave up looking eventually and after starting the engine and there was no strange sound, found it lying on a pipe. Goodness me!

If you read the answer above your post the reason code become obvious
