I noticed on sunday that the plastic surround behind the steering wheel on my SIII has had a hole cut in it in front of this hole on the ignition switch. It looks like someone has added this hole to access this slot

What is this slot for? It look like there is something that's supposed to go in there but is missing. Thanks for any info.

That is the cut off for the diesel fuel pump. It is an anti theft thingy. When you want the engine to stop, pull the switch thingy out which is connected to your fuel pump. It cuts off the fuel and stops the engine. To start the engine, turn key in ignition, push the switch in and it will start. it locks when the ignition key is removed. Your cable and switch/handle thingy is missing. May be that its been converted to petrol?

Thanks for the quick answers. It's still a diesel, but the engine stop is a pull-out switch located just by the side of my right knee when I'm sitting in the driver's seat.

It was probably replaced because if you dont treat them nice, they break.;)
Quite likely. That explains why the part that goes into this hole is missing. It also explains the scratches round the hole in the plasic surround that made me think it was hand cut.
