Hi guys, I inadvertently posted ghis wuestion in the intro subforum, my apologies for repetition.
I'm looking to buy a Landy in the next few months and my budget is about £15000. It's got to be automatic and around the 2-2.5 litre. I'd appreciate any advice on the best one to buy and the pitfalls to owning one, as ive never owned one. I've driven loads when I was in the army, driving theirs would not encourage you to own one. Thanks in advance for reading.

Are you talking a Defender or something shiny? a defender in auto spec is going to be something rare.

Yeah, Neilly, that's already been mentioned, thanks anyway. I think after a short reflection it going to be the Freelander. Although this may change.
 
If you are looking at a diesel (most likely) make sure none of the emissions control fittings have been tampered with or removed. Over the last few years owners have been removing cats, particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation valves (EGR). This year the MOT rules have been tightened up and if such removals are picked up it will be a fail.

You'll get a smashing Freelander 2 for that money :)

Didn't realise the army had any though.

Hi,

This will probably get stick from the fender and disco lot :D Depends on what off-road capabilities you require, but I would suggest the Freelander 2. Great on the road, not too bad offroad (don't know about you, but I am not driving in the jungles of Peru every day, or on an expedition across the Sahara :p). Excellent fuel economy (app 40mpg or 7l/100km) and so far, I have had no troubles with mine at all. I went with the lowest spec, GS diesel with manual gearbox, because it is the simplest model and has the least amount of electric extras out of the range.

Downsides:
1. Lacks storage space, but I do have my dog in the back.
2. It was also a bit of an issue to find all terrain tyres to fit the rims, but I did get some General Grabbers and the perform reasonably well.
3. Not a great deal of aftermarket modifications available, if that is something you are looking to do. There are some available, but you do have to dig deep on the internet.

Thanks Titus for your advice. The car probably won't see mud as I want it for the better ride height and the 4x4 capability in the snow, not that you get much in Liverpool. I will want all the frills but I realise it's more to go wrong.
 
Like a lot of people have said your needs define your vehicle. If you need the off road capabilities a Defender would be the way to go. But the other qualities of other vehicles should tip the scales, ie. comfort. warmth, safety etc. But good luck with whatever your choice.
