I Need Help With 4.4 V8 rattle on start up

Hello,
I have a 2003 L322 & it rattles on start up & then it runs as quite as a sewing machine, I suspect the hydraulic tappits are rattling because oil has drained back into sump, could I be right?
If so how can I check the non-return valve & were abouts is it, is it the one built into the oil filter housing?
A great thanks to anybody with any ideas.

plain and simple this is beyond the home mechanic!
after doing quite a few of these machines i as far as iam aware am one of the only independant land rover specalist who has the correct timing equipment to do the job of timing the engine to remove the heads and check the valves and also the vanos unit which is proberly what is causing the problem!

worth checking the oil pump pick up bolts havnt worked loose, this is often how people get cheap bmw's with the seller thinking the engine is knackered.

take the little sump off which is easy to get to and see if the bolts are loose on the pick up, if they are give the holes a blast of carb/brake cleaner and then fit the bolts back (after cleaning them too) with some locktite to make sure it doesnt happen again!

You never know it might be a simple fix, and its worth looking at!

on the old non vanos engines this was a problem on the latter ones it is more coman for a failure of the one way valve to be blocked due to poor oil and disintragting oil filters!

Hello, Thanks for the reply & help....which none return valve are you relating to, is it the one in the filter housing which lets the oil drain back into the sump when the filter is removed?

I think its on the e38 7 series too and they were 4.4 vanos engines, but it could be either problem- or niether.

its just its a cheap, quick and easy check to do before spending £££'s

there are 2 valves inside the block to each head which requires the head removing to get to them
