I need bigger wheels - what do you run?

Just got back from an expedition to Romania and I need bigger wheels. Currently have 235/70/16 BFG Mts which are brilliant, but I need greater clearance between ground and diffs.

Currently torn between 245/75/16 or 265/75/16, but definitely preferring the latter.

I would like to hear from those with experience actually running either of these in terms of whether they fit ok, if not, what needs altering? Also, what ET rims are you running them on? My D2 is lifted by 2" with the terrafirma TF230 kit

I have the current 235s on 25ET rims and the outer wall is immediately below the outer wheel arch cover. I'm thinking the 265s will be too wide and could catch if I use the 25ET modulars and instead I will need to run my alloys which are ET57.

It sounds to me like what you really mean is that you want to try bigger tyres, not wheels. 16" wheels will give you the best selection of tyres.

OK so with regard to the tyres, on my last DII I was running 265/75/16's and they gave more ground clearance, has no clearance issues with catching on the vehicle and made the final drive a bit longer so cruising speeds were more comfortable.

They were fitted to std D2 16" alloys.

Thanks Dave, that's exactly the information I needed!

I have the standard 16" rims so I'll use those and keep the current BFGs on the steel modulars. I was a little concerned whether the 265s will catch, so its good to hear that they are ok.

Hi Mike, now that I recall the only modification I did was to the steering bump stops. Out came the trusty angle grinder and I removed about 5mm off each bump stop.

They never caught on anything even at extreme steering angles.

They gave more height as my wife will attest, she finds it so much easier getting in the current DII with 255/65/16 (std) tyres.

Hi bud, here's a couple of pictures of mine with 265/75/16 maxxis bighorns before my lift

i had to have the front bumper chopped a little and they did catch off road, definitely a tyre that needs at least a +2lift if off roading, considering my car is used 80 on the road I was a little concerned they would be noisy but I must say... I'm extremely happy with them

like biglad said, cruising speeds are more comfortable and you do need a bit more pedal up hills and pulling away, I hope to compensate the gearing with a re-map , but definitely a good tyre for the money imo 👍
