Afternoon ,

I know this has been covered , but I cant really find a solution , new starter motor , new battery , new points , timing set , new starter solenoid

Landy starts first time when warm , I can go out out for a drive , pop into a shop and it will start straight away when I get back in , however if I leave it for approx 1 hr or overnight it always needs choke and 2 or 3 attempts , when it starts there is a small burst of smoke (small) it doesnt backfire and once that small burst of smoke goes there isnt any more.

I was wondering if it is the coil (do symptoms match) or somethng else
obviou , it runs really smoothly and always starts after a few attempts

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

seems pretty normal ,it doesnt hurt to replace coil, condenser, points ,dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads as a set, a weak ignition side would give a struggle to reach full power, you could check voltage at coil when starters engaged for excessive voltage drop, but that usually shows as engine firing a little when you release ignition key from the start position

My old S3 was a pain to start, as yours, until I added earth leads .. battery to body, battery to chassis, battery to earth, body to chassis to engine .. nothign too spectacular just well-made connections all sealed as well as I could. Made a massive difference to all the other electrics too .. :)

I also did this to me caravan which solved a lot of issues with that too .. :)

I had a similar starting issue with an old cortina that was like that - turned out there was a crack in the coil so was sparking weakly when the starter was cranking hard (with colder more viscous oil) but the engine was easier to crank when it was warm so it was OK. Took me bloody ages to work it out, and teven then it was only because it started to misfie after 30mins of running when the coil got hot!

Only other thought would be if the fuel was draining back slowly so the fuel pump had to work a bit before it resupplied the carb - a small inline fuel filter near the carb or remove the fuel supply line from the carb and crank from cold into a bottle to verify our getting good strong fuel flow and its not taking 20 second of cranking to prime and pump.
