I got a bit carried away with a few repairs....

So, a few months ago i started to do some repairs to the old 2a,the bulkhead was in a bit of a state and the chassis needed some patching up,but in true landy fashion its now turned into a full strip down and repair

First job was the front wings off to have a good look at the bulkhead

After further proding and poking and lots of cursing and swearing i decided the bulkhead was not worth repairing(more filler than steel) and the rear tub needed to come off to get to the top of the chassis to weld it so started to pull it in bits

Also took the engine out,rear crank is ****ing oil out so might as well do it while i'm at it

Not a bad few days work to say i was only gonna do a bit of welding!

Cheers, i'm lucky i work 4 days then i'm off 4 days so plenty of time to get on with it,apart from when i'm in charge of the kids when the missis is at work and on dog walking dutys

I've been at it for about 4 months so i'm in the final stages now and i'm bloody glad! just wanna get out playing in it now

well it looks pretty good keep up with it and i know what you have been through as i had to do the same to my 2a but not because of the rust bug because i rolled but she was back on the road within 2 months , good work and that first drive is amazing after pulling it all apart

So.... the next lot of pics for you to have a butchers at, unfortunately me being a thick **** i wiped the memory card on my digi camera with about 2 months worth of pics when trying to upload them :frusty: So the pics of the chassis repair,fitting of the replacement bulkhead/rear tub and a rollcage are all lost in the ether

I found a donor vehicle with a totaly rotten chassis for £500 and took the engine bulkhead,truckcab,doors,rear tub,seats and full cage and rocksliders off to fit to mine and what was left went to the scrapman.

Here she is with a repaired and painted chassis,replacement bulkhead/roof/rear tub/doors and rollcage.

The replacement bulkhead was in worse condition than I thought but I thought I might as well do a decent job of it,the one that was on was a s3 one that I put on years ago and this one is the proper 2a one. It needed both footwells replacing and the door pillars were starting to go so I replaced them as well also the top corners had gone in the usual place so I welded new pieces in.

Next was the front panel,a lick of paint and it was ready to fit back on

bolted back on and all hoses fitted

The next job was one I'd been thinking about for a while but I'll leave you in suspense with the next pic to see if you can guess what I was planning to do :confused2:

Flip forward wings/front perhaps? Looks like the wings wont fit due to the roll cage. Nice job there.

Not a flip front but not a bad idea,changing the plugs would be a lot easier.

No,it's one of the new shocker mounts I've made

With the disco axles the steering rod is at the rear of the axle and the shocks are also at the rear so when turning sharp the bar was hitting the shocker restricting the amount of lock.

I also wanted to try and get more articulation on the front because the series shocks are very short limiting travel.

Be carefull you dont lose tax free status by welding things onto the chassis.

Yeah,don't really know where I stand with that,I've not cut anything out of the chassis just welded to it. The standard mount is still in the chassis behind the new one so any probs and I'll put it back to original.

If your keeping the leaf springs and just adding longer shocks I wouldn't think anybody would notice
Just keep quiet and see what happens

Yeah,don't want coils on me series so i'll just keep the long shocks on and cross my fingers.
I spent a bit of time trying to come up with a simple design which wouldn't involve too much fabrication in case it didn't work,to my suprise it does work and I've got loads more articulation now

Would it not just be easier to clear up your yard of all them wheels and bits of wood.

But seriously, it is a great idea but how are you going to protect the engine from mud? More fabrication due I think.

Lol, fed up of tripping up over them so decided to put them to use!

All I was doing was making sure nothing was catching on full articulation before I put the wings back on,although the wings did need a bit of fettling,not so much for the shock mounts but where the cage goes.
I needed to make a hole in the top of the wing so the cage went through it so just measured it up and cut the hole out. The main problem was fixing the wing to the bulkhead,I couldn't use the original boltholes because I couldn't get to them due to the cage beign there. So I cut the lip off the wing,welded a piece of angle iron down the bulkhead where the bolts normally go and attached the wing with rivets from the outside.

Next job was to make another exhaust as the old one had rotted through and fallen off! The frontpipes were ok so it was only from the y-pipe back that needed doing,i went for larger bore than before because it was a tad too small so used 2 1/2 inch diameter pipe and cut and shaped it to fit

Made a nice little mounting fastened to the tub floor support

I'd managed to save the back silencer, actually.........the only silencer

And it all fitted together nicely and exits out of the side

Man does it burble now!!

Hi v8jon, how do you get on with mot with disco axles on? How much wider than normal 11a are they?
