hey chaps, i've just treated myself to a very nice p38, automatic diesel, its a v reg.

it starts okay, although i know we have to look at a leak somewhere as i can see air in the fuel pipes.

when i go to put ir in D or R if i'm not ready to put my foot down hard the engine stalls, it will also do it pulling away from waiting at lights if i'm not heavy footed enough!

any ideas? is this to do with the air grettng into fuel line/

i've only had it a day, got it for a bargain price so happy to sort this problem as its embarrasing stalling an automatic!

also does anyone know i a Kenlow fan will improve the performance and fuel consumption. my mum swears it will!

thanks in advance. xx

first thing i would do is drop a capfull of oil out of gearbox when cold otherwise you never get in back in when hot ,if blackish clutch pack going ,when they warp the plates drag, you can check air with clear plastic pipe going to pump from filter

I have just had the same problem with mine and i fixed it today it was the diesel pump filter and link up pipe and loose inlet manifold bolts mine is working fine now i hope that helps you

hi my old p38 would do the same as yours it was down to the intank fule pump. iv had to change the pump in the p38 i just sold aswell as it was very hard to start when low on disel :)

Maybe multiple faults.. Sorry.
Follow jamesmartin`s advice about checking colour as trans oil.
Sort air in fuel problem. If you can see bubbles you obviously have clear pipes, and they weren`t clear as standard (at least on earlier models, stand correction on a V reg). So someone has already been playing around here. Could be intank pump, or summat else.
Kenlowe fan good upgrade for older type fixed fans, but all RRs have a viscous clutch on their fans so no need to replace `em. (Kenlowe may be good choice if standard fan packs up tho).
Suggest you read up on EAS, if you new to P38s. Check out a few (of the many) threads on this site, but first visit Storey Wilson`s excellent "www.rswsolutions" site. You`ii see reference to cables to go with his free software, now available from Datatek on this site. The unlock suite works better with windows XP rather than Vista in my experience. (Trouble with USB, serial conversion.).
Couple more tips, many elec problems caused because of weak battery. Read about EKA. Get your EKA code NOW, if you don`t already have it. And read up before you need it. I spent 3 days without car because I didn`t know about this!
Anyway don`t let above put you off! Welcome to Landyzone.

If the car has aircon, I can supply a mod that uses the aircon fans to replace the viscous fan which will save you the cost of a Kenlowe.
Contrary to what has been said, removing the viscous fan and using an electric fan will improve fuel consumption but not by a lot. The improvement is most noticable on short runs in cold weather due largely to the faster warm up of the engine.

Probably much the same when new, but some are more shagged-out/less well maintained than others.
Before throwing money at go faster bits, just give your oldie a PROPER service.

why is it so many p38 vary in perfprmance, some being quicker,
the p38 disel is very very slow from new. so alot of them have been chiped my 98 range rover had a chip and it was as quick if not quicker then my brothers 4.0l. my 2001 dhse has not got a chip and is as slow as a milk flot:mad:

you back on the milk round jamie? it will be a lot quicker now with the audi (you traitor):violin::hysterically_laughi
lol:):) the audis just for now mate grate car but to small inside the wife says get the range back but im gona stick with this for now. but sell it in good time. and come christmas get the new shape range or a x5 ....ill sell the audi all day for £7000 but would only see £5000 for the range rover and thats on a good day. so it will be worth it in the end:D so you see im not a traitor this is just a quicker way to get something better.. id love a new shap like mr goonarmy. o **** silly me he ant got one:doh::mooning::D:D:D

as soon as i get home from the house sitting i'm currently doing i'm going to do a full service (anything that can have the fluid changed will be done) then i'll investigate the fuel lines, then think about fans etc, it does have aircon, which possibly needs re gassing? (my first car with aircon)
looking forward to tinkering on something that has no rust! (just got rid of a 300tdi disco)
thanks for help chaps, watch this space. xx

A Kenlow won't make any difference to performance or fuel consumption, your'd be better off clearing out your handbags less weight to pull around.....:behindsofa:

its not the handbag that weighs a lot, its the selection of guns, cartridges and a saddle, not to mention the 6 inch heels i dont drive around in (they sit on the passenger seat till i reach my destination, and thats only to stop me scuffing the heels)
