How do you value an original defender?

Hi

ive been abroad until quite recently. A bit taken aback at defender prices - and other brands.

How do you bracket what a particular vehicle is worth? Can still see Defender projects here and there for 6-8k. Some finished ones look very expensive 15-19k or more. Im really considering letting mine go as I dont have the time to use it...

I also dont want to be rinsed by a dealer!
 
To get a value price for my insurance renewal I put my 2000 TD5 90 through wee buy any car - £12k. Couldnt believe it. I bought mine for £2.5k 2 years ago but have restored it, not too expensive just all my time for a year. Crazy money.

Are we talking a 1984 One Ten with a 2 1/4 petrol and a rusty chassis and bulkhead?

Or a showroom condition 2015 Puma?

I would expect a considerable difference between what you might sell the two vehicles for.

My own preference would be LRO magazine. Placing an advert is free, and it goes on the website as well as in the magazine.
I figure that enthusiasts tend to look at the mag and website, randomers and timewasters tend to look at ebay and gumtree.

If you have a figure in mind that you would like to achieve, go for that, plus a bit more to allow for haggling. Most buyers will expect 10% off asking price.

If it was mine, I would be looking for about 7k for that, so maybe put it on about 8k, and see what happens.
If you don't get any takers, you can always reduce the price.
Putting the price up once someone has come to look at it is much more difficult.

I am looking for more than 8.... Id just keep it at that price. However I suppose it also depends on what else is out there.

The situation is rather complicated now, because of the introduction of ULEZ in London, which will soon be extended to other major cities.

From what I have seen, vehicles that are not compliant without paying the charge are now selling better in rural areas than around the big cities.

But as I said before, the market is the only judge, you will either get interest at your chosen price, or you won't.

What are you hoping to achieve?

If you are hoping to increase the longevity and usefulness of the vehicle to yourself, probably yes.

If you are hoping to increase the resale value, probably no.
 
This is a question I've been pondering too. I have an original 90 (1986) which, after a few iterations, now runs a 3.9i V8 and.....an auto box. Kind of "just because I could" but it was something I wanted to do and MrsC always found the old LT95 too agricultural (although she hasn't driven it since I completed the conversion about a year ago!).

Now mine's not tidy or pristine by any measure; to a certain extent I prefer it that way as I don't worry if it takes a little knock or scratch. But I was looking at converted auto Defenders for sale (not the factory ones) and was somewhat surprised by the prices being asked. There aren't many about, but tidy enough, but ordinary, diesel autos start in the high teens? I have mine on an agreed value policy at £7.5k, but I'm wondering whether I'm way off with that?
