how do you use the hill descent thingy

hi folks just bought the missus a freelander 1.8 5 door for lugging around the dogs got it very cheap head gasket gone so fixed it all up stands me just under a grand on a v hope this sounds cheap, i know its not the best choice of engines but at that price £ 350 for car then cost of head repair belts pulleys etc tyres,who cares but my trouble is i didnt get the hand books with it so i dont know how to work the hill descent gadget any help would be very nice cheers, another minor point is it usual to bog down a bit when you put these on full lock been told its a quirk of the car ??
 
Never tried it on an early manual, but you squeeze the yellow button on the gear lever and push the collar up or down.
It needs to be in 1st or Reverse to work, then the green light should come on. If you're not in the right gear the light will flash.
If no lights come on, look underneath for lose wires, as the constant movement of the gear lever can cause the wire to break, presumably that's why they moved it on later ones.
 
and you need a hill to for it to work . don't engage it as my other half did while driving.... i have now unplugged mine just in case.

i dont know if it damages it in anyway if you engage it while doing 50mph?
 
No.
It only works in 1st & Reverse gear. If you do manage to do 50 in first, it only works below 30 mph. Having your foot on the accelerator also overrides it, so unless you change down into 1st gear whilst slowing to a stop, there is no technical reason for not leaving it engaged at all times (the flashing light would get annoying.)
Engaging it at speed will do no harm, as it won't actually engage!
 
HDC can be selected with the vehicle in any gear, but will only operate once 1st or reverse gears (‘1’ or ‘R’ for automatic transmission) are engaged.

With HDC selected, if 1st or reverse gear have been engaged, the HDC information light (GREEN) in the instrument panel will illuminate (if 1st or reverse gear have not been selected, the information light will flash).

To select HDC, squeeze the yellow trigger mounted in the gear lever and slide the collar section down until the yellow band is visible above the collar, and then release.

To deselect HDC, squeeze the trigger - the collar will lift automatically.

HDC can be left selected while driving, the system will only operate when
needed and gear changes can be carried out in the normal way.

If I am sitting in nuetral and switch the HDC on should I get the green flashing light on the dash ? Have tried this and nothing happens, just wondering if mine has been disconnected
