How do you Identify a Radiator

I Have a S3 109" with a retro fitted 3.5V8. This happened before I got it. The rad blew on me a few weeks ago and so now I need to buy a new one.

I've pulled the blown one out. I don't think who ever fitted the engine fitted the V8 rad (as I'm told that some fabrication is needed to get it to fit), so now I have to choose from the 2 1/4 4 cylinder standard rad, 2 1/4 4 cylinder heavy duty rad, or the 2.6 6 cylinder rad.

I'm guessing at the 6 cylinder rad, but is there anyway I can tell what the one I've taken out is?
 
that were daft.

Dont the HD 2.25 rad have an extra core or layer or somethin? so i suppose that'd be better. I know paddocks sell both, sounds daft, specially the recent slating, but try ringing them or someone else, like m&m 4x4 if they do it, and ask what the difference is. I'd go for the HD one tbh

I have no idea how this happened!! I can’t see how some thing could have come from the engine (as this is the side that faces the engine) to do this, unless something hit the fan.

On a side not, how does the fan work, is it suppose to be on all the time? Or does it have to get hot first, and once either the shaft or the fan centre expands with heat it grips and stats to work?

It's just that the fan was loose. Both the bolts holding the pulley on, and the centre nut holding thee fan on. I've tightened them up, but the fan spins freely on the shaft, with a small amount of play. Is this as it should be?

think summits busted mate, its on all the time, thats why ppl remove them and fit lecy fans, save yourself some time and effort and get one, only comes on when required (15% of time if that) and ditch the metal frisbee
 
i'm not sure how much play there should be, but if it's a viscous fan then it's sposed to lock up as the engine heats up.

get the engine hot then stop it and see if the fan still spins freely... if it does, it's broked.
 
I thought the main difference between a 4 & 6 cyl rad was which side the bottom hose came out, but looking at those photos it must be the top hose.
 
Apparently the only difference is the top hose position on the 6cylinr is on the top right (looking from the engine), and the 4 cylinder is in the middle.

Also they make all the rads 4 core now, so you don't have the choice between the two unless you buy old stock and particularly want the less cores.

Paddocks do sell them, for £95 + VAT according to there website, but if you order it the call you up and say "actually it's £125 + VAT".

So I looked else where and found that Land Rover spare parts and accessories | Landrover Series 1 and 2 Discovery Range Rover Freelander sell them for £112, but when I actually called them, it turns out that they often get second hand ones, so I managed to get a nearly new 4 core 4 cylinder rad for £50 + £8 delivery.

I bought a 15" leccy fan off eBay (off of a 230bhp Volvo T5) for £20 + £10 P&P
