Hi, I've just inherited a Defender 110 as my company has just purchased a new 110. It's a 2.5lr deisel, manual , C reg and has done 180k. It sounds a bit rough compared to the companies TD5 engine.
I have always owned standard petrol cars and have always dreamt of owning a Landrover Defender. It all feels like another world when i pop that bonnet up and i must say that I feel like i have taken on a whole new responesability by taking the defender under my wing (or am i under it's wing?) But i was wondering if anyone out there had some tips on the following:-
1)servicing it, .............information on the best parts to buy? oils, filters, procedures, handbooks (do i bother with the dredded haynes? ) etc.
2)I've never owned a diesel what's the crack with the glow plugs, is it as straight forward as 'off with the old and on with the new'?
3) I know it's quite old but the gear change is abit rough in the mornings, grinding gears (mainly in first and second), gets smoother if i rev the
engine. is that normal?
4) once i'm away everytime i change up a gear, as soon as i bring the clutch up i feel a thump, is that normal?
5) Anyone know any good breakers to get parts in and around London?
6) i can just about manage 50mph then it starts doing slarlam on the dualcarriage way, surely that's not normal. my tyres are offroad tyres, but could it be the tracking?
7) there's no heating, any solutions?
i'm not sure if i should just 'get in there and do it' or whether i should wait........ for that moment of clarity?
Anyway that's my plight for this week. i'm sure you'll hear from me soon. as i spend most sundays taking things apart and then the week to put it all back together again.
Cheers, and thanks.
