So my headlights have started flickering when driving.
I reckon it's the headlight switch, so as I had a spare I thought I'd replace it.

Got so far (including removing the steering wheel without breaking my nose) but am stumped how to get the windsceen wiper switch out. There seems to be one clip type thing left holding it in - picture attached.
How do I get it off without just breaking it with brute force?

Ah, so it's the star washer I'm stuck on.

Now that I know it's called a 'star washer' I feel feeble for not being able to shift it.
Just yank it off, or is there a knack to doing it nicely?

Just get a screwdriver behind star washer and prise it off, you might be able to open the prongs on the washer a little and wiggle it out. If there is not a new star washer with the new switch, flatten the prongs on old one a little once off to make it fit tightly.

You should be able to unscrew from it ... hold it in some needle nose molegrips and turn them ...

So I am a big drama queen.

Little bit of a jiggle, prising and lifting with a screwdriver got it off in one piece.
It then went back on easy enough later.

Cheers for the common sense input. Was a lot more straightforward than I expected in the end.

but.......but........the headlight switch comes out without removing the indicator stalk doesn't it......?? Oh well, hope it fixed the flicker - I'm on 6th switch over 3 Defenders, crummy design and I guess the relay mod is a great idea one day! Cheers, A

The relay helps with the electrickery load going around crappy ancient wiring and bodges by previous owners to fit a radio ...

The headlight switch I bought came with that metal plate thing that the other switches connect to - http://www.paddockspares.com/stc439-indicator-horn-headlamp-dip-switch-ha455946-to-va104805.html

Definitely better now, but there's still a flicker on the bigger road bumps.

However, what is this relay mod you talk of?
