Just put a 3.5 diff in the rear of me Lightweight, taken it round the block and now the rear hubs are warm. To fill the axle I jacked it up on 1 side and poured in 3lts of oil. How does the oil get into the wheelbearings??? Don't think its the brakes as I can push it ok..

The outer race of the hub bearing is bolted to the end of the axle casing. An ’O’ ring seals the joint between the outer race and the axle casing to prevent leakage of differential lubricating oil. The hub bearing is a sealed unit which
contains twin opposed roller bearings, pre-packed with grease during manufacture.

In other words, the oil you tipped in does NOT lube the hub bearings, and if the bearings are heating up you might want to find out why PDQ.

When the drive flange was off I could see the outer race and rollers. No sign of grease or seal, just a pair of taper roller bearings which appear to be splash lubed.The only O ring I found stops oil from leaking up the splines and out the flange. ""mr Haynes"" tells me there is a filling plug but it must be made of invisible stuff.!!

ah think yer getting yer fronts and rears mixed up there laddo! anyway yer bearing are grease lubbed which is done by removing big nuts under drive flange, pulling the hub orf and repacking them wiff grease.

and its means repacking , not going "oi! bearing ! look heres some grease to look at!"
 
Im new to landrovers but been doing some work on my series 3 swb so not sure how this compares to the lightweight. I dont have answers but more questions!
Is the 3.5 diff the same ratio as in front axle, i have read you can get wind up in drivetrain which sounds like it can cause heat. does this happen only when in 4WD

simple one could the heat on hubs be coming from your braking when going round the block, hub bearings too tight?

i recently did the rear hub bearings and seals on both sides, when i pulled the halfshafts out oil came out but figured the new seals around hub bearings and hub cap would keep oil in.

the Haynes manual says half fill hub with grease

I know who I would believe, and it isn't Mr Haynes this time.

Molygrease (any sort) is very good in those bearings, and helps them run C-o-o-L

Maybe it's time to buy a more up to date manual. the 1972 one I have seems a bit out of date!!!! Apoligeeees to mr Haynes I has the Autobook version. Time to get rusty in the rain and finger me hubs wif latex on.
 
just to clarify, its no good just bunging grease in yer hubs, you need to work it into the bearings by hand, wearing latex gloves or any other pervy wear will not help as you lose the friction required to gert it forced into the rollers.

Just removed hubs and oil fell out. There does not appear to be a seal between the halfshaft and the outerrace.? That lifium jollop is well juicey. How much ""wobble" should I give the hub b4 I does up the locking nut.
 
tighten it up while turning the hub, so as to settle it.. then back orf nut. retighten by hand as much as you can. then lock up lock nut.

the actual figure should be 4-6 thou"
 
Just to clarify: You should be able to adjust the play out by turning the box spanner by hand............like without a gert bar thru it...........until there's no play but the wheel still turns freely.
 
i concurr wif marcu's clarification, although the gossip according to st solihull says 4-6thou" most folks concurr to do consecutive hubs by the method that has bin concurred to by me. would you agree to concurr to this marcus?
 
ere Marcus - when I asked yu about repacking my bearings - yu said - "all it did was make ir smell all funny"

yu mean I gotta undo all mee nuts agin and packem now - ffs!
