Hello Guys,
I hope I'm welcome on the forum - I'm afraid the only 4x4 I've owned was a Mazda B2500 double cab pickup but it was no Chelsea Tractor! No, back in 2009 we shipped it to Australia for 6 months and drove from West to East Coasts straight through the middle on a route known as the 'Outback Way' - Australia's longest shortcut! Then we shipped it to NZ for a 3 month expedition there before shipping it back home! We did the trip with 2 small children (3 & 6 at the time) so we did 'home schooling' with them, camping en route but staying with friends and family whenever possible. Although we travelled to every state and every state capital in Aus there was one trip I still want to do - up to Cape York, the Northern tip of Queeensland and I plan on doing it in a Landie (A Range Rover P38 preferably - I don't know why, but then if I used reason we would never have done the last trip!) Any questions about our expedition I would be glad to answer.
I learned a few things about Engels that may be of interest on that trip. Like, whilst many countries share the same voltages, Engel make subtly different models for each country, so Aus, GB and South Africa units all have different parts numbers or that although the warranty is only valid in the country of purchase officially, they do in fact honour the warranty internationally. Anyway, hi everyone and if you have any questions, please just ask :)

Sorry Thor - I have removed the offending reference. I had a good look but can't seem to find the rules bit - am not finding the forum very easy to navigate. If amongst all your smilies you'd put the link to the rules in then maybe I could read them. An earlier enquiry on how to post in the for sale section has so far gone unanswered...

Fossils are banned for noobs ...

you have to prove yourself first ...

mwahhhhhhhh

Thanks blue beasty, 50 posts though! That'll take me a while. Without having a project vehicle or planned trip that could take for ever! I do have experience of shipping a truck around the world with accompanying carnets etc. Whilst Outback, I made the classic error of taking off the radiator cap when I thought the coolant had escaped to find it hadn't... a short delay and then an eruption of scalding water like a fountain. One 2nd degree burn later to my wrist (apparently I was lucky, most of us idiots that do that peer down the rad and get it in the face and neck...). So, I have some experience that may be of interest. I fitted out the pickup with a shelf made of ally checkerplate and wooden posts, 2nd battery, etc. I travelled over endless miles of corrugations and track and did not suffer a single puncture - I'd tell you what make and model of tyre I used but I fear it would be advertising :) and I can tell you that if you have to ask how much it cost me then you don't want to do a similar trip - I'll be paying it off for many years to come...

dont take a P38 across anywhere, unless you want a lot of probs, electrical, suspension, slipped liners etc etc.:(

I've just found the rules! Click on TOS at the bottom of the page and you get taken to an acceptable use document. What's TOS stand for? Terms of Service? Couldn't you just call it 'rules'?

Thanks for the advice gemsdad, I've read before that the air suspension if looked after can be pretty reliable and I've often wondered how much more reliable you could make a car if you pulled out all unnecessary electrical bits. Like could you fit manual window winders in place of motors and could you rip out central locking and associated keyfob/alarm etc, etc. Never knew about a slipped liner problem - is that the BMW diesel? I've got my heart set on one :( I suspect I've gone beyond an intro now and need to clear off to the rest of the forum... Thanks again

no liners are for the v8 petrol engines.diesel engine can have cyl head probs though, but not very often compared to liner probs.if you get a v8 one and the liners have been done, make sure they are the TOP HAT liners.the problems you will get will be will the BECM and RF receiver.do a search on here for those probs.plus the airbags are the other things that go BANG,but easy to replace.;) also if you do take a P38 on this journey, get the BECM unlocked by a specialist.plenty about.it will save you loads of problems.
