Just got my V5 back. Car now historic tax so free. Bizarrely the car also has 12 month tax on it even though it is currently not insured. So much for them checking properly. I didn’t apply for tax just to change the class. Cars all in bit anyway being restored so no issue anyway mister plod!

Technically - you will need to do a SORN.
It must be insured if on the the road, and by default you are saying it is on the road if taxed.

That is not the case.
There was a new law….
The AA make it simpler reading and say the following:

Unless you've registered your vehicle as off the road (Statutory Off Road Notification/SORN) or it's in the process of being transferred to a new keeper by DVLA, it must be insured.

  • The offence of being the 'keeper of an uninsured vehicle' was introduced in the Road Safety Act (2006)
  • Continuous Insurance Enforcement came into force in 2011.
  • There are still around a million uninsured drivers on our roads costing you and every other honest driver an average £30 a year on your insurance.
  • That £30 goes to fund payments to victims of uninsured drivers made by the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB).
  • More than 2 million warning letters have been sent to drivers whose car was neither insured or SORN'd.
  • There are around 6,000 prosecutions for keeping an uninsured vehicle every month.

Correct if you also change ownership and obtain a log book in your own name you must if restoring it SORN at the same time...

You need to SORN it...

...or insure it. Try getting a quote, as a second vehicle (access to a main vehicle) doing less than 1000 miles per year depending on your personal circumstances you could be looking at £75 pa or less. I used Confused.com for my classic quote and it was £58 fully comp with a £20 Halfords voucher. Worth a look, could be hand if it gets nicked or catches fire during restoration.
