Hi
i have a 99 frelander 2.0d my hill descent doesnt seem to be working i have checked the wires at the gear stick and 1 of the wires was broken so i extended the wire ans solderd them back in place and still nothing happens i also tested the power supply and there is power even when the button is engaged there is no lights on the dash could anyone give me any addvice to what the problim might be.

It is a load of rubbish anyway. Never found it useful. If you use it on snow on asphalt conditions, it will most likely get you in a dangerous situation as the braking action is often harsh enough to cause loss of control. I.e. you may find yourself going sideways, which I must admit, is slightly worrying! (been there, done that.)

If you use it on a steep hill with slightly rough terrain, you will find that it will take you approximately two years to get to the bottom of the hill. In which case, you will probably find yourself turning it off once you start to get bored.

While it's doing the work for you, you will lose the feel for the car and should you need to take over when things go wrong, it will take you a few seconds to get that feel back. By which time, it could be too late. It is hard to describe this exactly, but those who have been in this situation will know exactly what I mean.

Never once found it useful to be honest. Always found first gear to be sufficient at holding the car at low speeds on steep descents, whether it be in snow, mud or whatever.

Sorry if this a stupid suggestion but you have squeezed the button on the gear lever and then moved the gaitor down to engage it?

yes i have done everything that i can think of nothing seems to work i had a look at the sensor at the the front of the gearbox looks like i will have to do with out it just would have been nice to have it if i ever needed it.

i guess your right a fancy button thats not worth a crap i wont miss what i never had i only bought it a few weeks ago and it hasent work since i got the car so i wont miss it thanks for the reply anyway.

HDC works ok for me. Just remember if there's no grip, then it won't work. If the slope is very seep then I drive towards it above the speed which triggers the HDC, then take my feet off just before the top of the slope. That way the HDC is running and ACTIVATED to brake the wheels whilst going over the top. Hence it will keep you at a steady pace whilst going down the slope. This method isn't the safest option for some, as you need to time it right. You has bin warned. It int my fault if yer gets it wrong.

Alternative is to drive slowly over the top and down the slope. As yer Freelander speeds up, it then has to correct the speed. This is where some think it's failing as it takes time to bring the speed under control.
