hoping someone can give some guidance on the above problem. I have a 1997 P reg 4.6 HSE with A/C and last week i started getting a high pitch squeak around the water pump / viscous fan area. So i have just replaced the water pump and replaced the coolant etc tonight started her up and after reaching temp it started again!!!! it only does this while idling and not when i am driving. Can anyone give me some ideas? It has a single point LPG conversion installed and has had the head gasket done already (i have only owned it for 3 months). I cant pin point the noise - the serpentine belt was in good nick.

i am relativley new to the mechanical world so an idoits guide is appreciated. cheers guys

If it were me I would get a length of hose, stick one end in my ear and trace it, you would be surprized how well it works.

Try drizzling water in the belts, if it goes away then its one of the belts if not could be dry alternator bearing or if not errrr errr.. not sure.

thanks for the comments people! i have been using the old screwdriver trick for the sounding which is also very effective. i will try some water on the serpentine belt tomorrow and see how it goes. if it is the alternator bearing is that a brand new one or can the bearing be greased??!!! (hopefully not a silly question but still new the mechanic world!)

i tried the water on the belts but no joy so i spoke to some guys in work and they suggested using 'belt spray' and spray on the cogs which i did......... and it cured the problem!!! so will keep an eye on the belt and change when required. thanks for all your help

well it got worse!! so i replaced the serpentine belt on saturday and appeared to be ok but this morning it now wines again!! i coated the belt with a belt dressing spray to help prolong the belt life. So far only £50 to do the water pump and belt but now wandering if it could be one of the following:

1) viscous fan bearing
2) alternator bearing or the alternator itself (hope not)
3) or one of the other pulleys
4) air con compressor pulley

what other things should i look out for that might indicate the alternator is on its way out? i will check the service hstory that came with the car to see if there has been any previous work on it.

The noise now appears to be while the engine is idling there is really no noise except when it is cold. Once warm it only makes the noise when i use the accelerator??? it all appears to be coming from the air con compressor area.

ideas again? sorry! but thanks in advance

I am having the exact same problem. I think it is the AC clutch/pulley. Let me know how you get on. Anyone know where to get a new clutch/pulley and how to fit one?

well people here is an update!

as you can see from my first post i have replaced a number of things and then i replaced the alternator with a brand new £122 one hoping this would stop the noise!!! did not work!! so after all this time and cash everything i replaced was ok so i am going to clean up the water pump, PAS pump, alternator and air con compressor unit and put them on ebay as they all bloody work with no worries!!! sods law.

anyway what i mechanic friend told was to remove the belt and turn the engine on and listen for the noise and if i did not hear anything that meant it had to be one of the pulleys... so just finished it (day off work today to get tv fixed but that is a whole different story!!!) and there was no noise at all with the belt off so that meant had to be one of the pulleys. So i sprayed wd 40 on the auto tensior and the noise was still there so i tried the bottom big pulley and again noise still there. so i moved on to the one below the PAS pump / pulley (smooth faced pulley) which i dont know the name of and sprayed wd and the noise stopped!!! result i thought!!!! but can i found out the name and part number of this item....nope! looked in the RAVE but no joy.

so alll i need is an experienced landy person to tell the name and part number so i can order one. i have spoke to island 4x4 but they cant figure it out but if i can supply the number they can find it.

please as i am nearly there!!! sorry for the long post. i have added pic to show the one i mean it is the one at the very bottom of the pic below the PAS pulley (smooth faced). thanks guys

well i have done some digging and the part i am told (they have described it too and it matches my description!! i hope!) is a static idle pulley known as idler ancilliary drive pulley and part number err6702 and i have just paid £25 all in delivered from island 4x4 so hopefully that is it. thanks for listening to my rant so hopefully will fit on monday night!
