High Mileage 300tdi - Oil Spec experience

So, fresh oil and filter to book spec (10/40) bit tappety now compared to the black treacle that it replaced, but no oil smoke evident so rings/seals seem sound.

As it’s got 240k miles on it, have you got experience of say 15/40 being a quieter option on a nicely run in unit - what’s the trade off?

No trade off, just use a quality oil. Run mine on Fuchs Titan Truck for years.

Have you checked the tappet clearances?

At 240k it is well overdue a tappet clearance adjustment.

well worth doing, easy too.

As for oil keep to a 10w40 or 15w40, the latter being slightly thicker when cold.

I’ll get me feelers out! No idea what previous owner(s) did, judging by its condition I’d say untouched (except it does have new belt and tensioner which is a bonus)

Added to the list along with an unsplit intercooler and a radiator that has fins not holes….
