Hi to everyone here!
At first I must apologize for some language problems (I am german and so my English could be a bit old school). Sorry for that!
I own a Freelander 2 MY 2011 with the 150hp engine for half a year now, car was new built. From the beginning we have a quite disturbing, very high frequency noise during acceleration, especially ongoing while on the motorway ("autobahn"). This noise ist like tinnitus and ringing in the ear.
Our local dealer here in Germany had few tries to eliminate the noise, with changing the turbocharger and so on. No success.
In der German LR forum I read some threads from people who complain the same noise.
Does any driver in the UK know about this problem with the Freelander 2 MY 2011?
I would be very glad to hear,
thanks so far
Jens

I assume it is the td4 version.

would be looking at the intercooler hoses for splits and holes, not sure they are as prone as the old td4 as totally different engine.

if it's 2011, it's still under warranty so back to the dealer I reckon

good luck

If its coming from behind you , there is a massive fail of diff pinion bearings. LR made them crap ;) There is a bulletin for it and its common.

They make a horrible noise at motorway speeds, but its definately noticable that its behind you.

Apart from that the FL2 does have a standard audible turbo whistle.

I have heard of one or two FL2's with airleaks from the EGR pipes, located down the back of the engine. Can be hard to pinpoint, but black staining from the escaping gases is the only real sign.

Also : If you think your English is bad, you wanna checkout the Defender forums. Them farmers have a language of their own :)

Hello and thanks for the both quick responses!
Right, it is the TD4. But in the German LR forum I met someone who has the same noise problem with his SD4.
The noise comes from the front, especially left - best place to hear is the drivers seat:eek: - almost everyday for me....
It is worse around 1800-2300 rot/min. what points to the turbocharger.
As far as I know the dealer checked everything and did not find any leaking with charger, egr, whatever..... the car was in for five times now.
My LR dealer says its "technical standard".....though I compared with the same TD4 engine in another car and the "old" FL2 - here the charger did whistle a bit but no matching with my car.
Quite frustrating, because in nearly all other conditions the car ist very fine.
Best regards from Berlin
Jens

Jens, I would suggest going back to the dealer and requesting to use another new FL2 for a week or so. See if the irritating high pitched noise is present in that one too.

Hi Skynet,
sorry I didn´t mention it yet: I compared to three (!) other Freelanders 2 - not any of them with this disturbing high "tinnitus" noise....
Thanks so far!
Jens

You need to keep taking it back to the dealer. Can the dealer hear the noise? Also perhaps contact land rover customer assistance or what ever they're called.

I cant imagine that the dpf cleaning system is working all the time? The noise is associated with acceleration.
