Hi

I registerd a while back it seems but i dont think i ever posted.. I am J from Kent. I dont actually own a Landie (Shock Horror) however I did convince mt neighbours to buy one so...

And that is why i have come back to the forum as they have asked for some advice. Basically they want some maintenance advice.

They have one of the last run out 90 2 door hardtop defenders in dark green. Lovely beasty.
They want to know what to do about oxidisation on wing mirrors and about re painting them black.
Also similar question regarding metal side kick plates and rear metalwork and step.

Is there a specific process and materials required or is it just a spraycan bodge job?

Any help and advice that I can pass on would be much appreciated.

7 years and the only problem is now....shabby wing mirrors!

Think they bought the best one on the planet :D:p

I rattle canned mine for some spare change - primed then coated few times. You’d want something hardwearing for the steps/kicks. It was bodge job but came out nice and lasted. I eventually knocked a tree and snapped one off - I glued it back together with mig weld, that’s when I learned they were alloy filings not real metal. Still worked for years just one was shorter where I melted the arm away.

Welcome (back) to LandyZone :)

In my defence I dont think they bought it 7 years ago. Maybe only 5-6 ;)

In their defence they are retired so not overly into offroading but they wanted to replace their old Japanese Soft Roader and asked my advice. I promptly tole them to buy a landy.

On the wing mirror the issue is that the material the stalk is made of oxidises and causes the paint to flake off. Is there a way to prevent that so they dont have to keep repainting it?

I rubbed mine right down to the bare alloy. Was same with mine they scaled up and the paint flaked off. Prep is the key

- Only painted them once in19yrs and it stayed black.

Suppose that stuff you get to descale kettles would work same??
