Hi All,

I'm Nick, and I'm thinking of getting back into Landy ownership, as I used to have a Series 3 a few years ago, and miss the fun!

I therefore have quite a few questions for you all - not sure if this is the best section to post them in? If not, I'll copy the rest of this post into a new thread in a more appropriate area...

I am after a Land Rover, but due to space and money constraints it will have to be my everyday car, and so needs to be suitable for general social use, the occasional motorway trip, etc. It also has to be under 4.5m long to fit on my driveway, ruling out the LWB models. Its main use, at least at first, will be for greenlaning and rally marshalling (my other hobby is motorsport...), as well as the usual day-to-day use on tarmac roads.

I'm fairly spanner happy, but have neither the facilities nor the skills to weld.

The old SIII I had was too slow, noisy and rough for everyday use IMHO, particularly as it had a non-standard engine with poor gearing. The next logical choice therefore would be a TDi 90, but is that a 'sensible' idea?

I currently have about £2.5k to play with, plus whatever I could get for my current estate car (I reckon £5-600) for sprucing up - is this enough to get a reasonably decent car? Being my main vehicle it would need to be ready-to-drive, I can't store a restoration project.

I'm based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, if that makes any difference...

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Hi Nick, from Nick :) im sure ull be let off asking a few questions this thread, as long as it doesn't involve tyres

for about 3K you could either get a solid discovery 1, or a 90 that may need a little work, and showing signs of age.

if I had the money I would of got a decent 90 but as I don't at the moment im starting out with a discovery whilst I save :), although found it very capable off road and greenlaning with a decent set of mud tyres, nice to drive even on longer journeys, fairly good on mpg and most of all great fun!

Thanks Nick,

I am considering a Disco as well, but I understand they can rot quite badly as they age, and are (at the cheaper end of the market) more likely to have been neglected by non-enthusiast owners?

Hi Nick,

I'm in the same boat, been without a landy now for a couple of years and now need a 4x4 for work.
I've always had series 3's but needing it for work, to carry 2 kids and my wife plus all my kit and all the camping gear I would need a 110, the only down side is I can't afford one yet so am looking for a 300tdi disco1 that's solid.
I hope you find what your looking for. I'm new here but they seem friendly and have loads of great advise.
Matt.

Well, after much research, I've now bought a 1997 Discovery 300TDi :) It needs a few bits and bobs doing, but overall seems to be pretty tidy, and appears to have been looked after...

I've started a thread for it in the Disco section.

Hi Nick
You have chosen wisely...Disco 1s, in my opinion, mirrors the ideas behind the original 1948 Series 1. It was designed and manufactured quickly for a changing market place, using parts from other vehicles and its success helped to keep the company afloat in difficult times.
They are cheap to buy, maintain, tax and insure, they are fantastic off road and it's the perfect family vehicle.
Last year my 19 year old 300 tdi travelled 14000 miles supporting my families lively hood with minimal drama..and today it passed another MOT.
Disco1s... understated but bloody brilliant!
