Help! :eek: My freelander has officially died! The problem seems to be head gasket failure & now I think the engine has seized!

Can anyone tell me is it possible to put a diesel engine into what had been my 1998 1.8 k series freelander? the body of the car is in mint condition

everything is possible, that question has been asked before and the majority opinion is that it's much more trouble that it's worth

better of looking for a replacement 1.8 to replace yours

what seems to be the problem? Have you had a definitive diagnosis on the 1.8, are you sure its terminal.
Any symptoms for us to go on?
You can swap it for the L-series diesel, Bandit600 was the last to do this although he had some probs.
You will need the diesel engine with wiring loom, plus engine mounts. Not sure what way fuel line is changed/adapted.
 
she started overheating very badly.stalled. white smoke billowing from the engine, bonnet really hot to touch & even some of the hosing melted! The first time this happened I was able to top up the coolant, replaced the hose & got the car driving again but this time she has packed in completely! The engine doesnt turn over at all now & I think it may be seized. Its such a shame as it was a great driving car.
 
Its not good when the k series overheats, the aluminium can warp. Same aluminium in the head of the diesel engines you might be interested to hear before you decide on a fix.
The only way to tell is by removing the head and measuring tolerances (figures can follow if you need them )
Not sure of a decent garage up that way. How handy are you with a spanner?
You should still be able to rotate the engine using the 22mm crank pulley nut (low down drivers side), at least this would allow all the timing marks to be lined up before a strip down.

hmm .. i wish i was handy with a spanner .. looks like another 'task' for my brother!! lol
ive phoned a few places & been met with the '..ohh that will cost you ..' response - so its not really looking good at all! other than that there have been offers of £60 to tow away for scrap but it seems too good a car to do that ... ive nearly even thought of selling it bit by bit on ebay!!
 
Name and shame the scrapyard this offered you £60. I dont know what was said in the telephone conversation but after the £60 remark my second word would have been 'OFF'
A second hand running 1.8 should only cost several hundred, yours is the early 1.8 with dizzy cap, MEMS 1.9 ECU, any Rover 1.8 with dizzy cap is the same. You could even order one from the mainland and pay about £75 freight charge. Turner engineering will exchange your engine with a fully re-conditioned one, around £1500
Search for a thread entitled '1.8 more info' by the MAD HAT MAN, there are LR technical bulletins you should look at for the figures, esp bulletin no. 0036. This will let you know if the engine is within tolerances. I cant understand why it wont turn over, warped plastics fouling the timing belt?? melted wiring? It should all be inspected before condemning the engine.
Dropping the engine is straight forward, i have a thread 'freelander clutch options' shows all in the thread.

hello

yes its poss but a lot of bits needed i was half way into a convert last year but was using a rover sdi engine, which needed gear box plate changed. antway went out and got myself a diesel instead. but if you do go ahead try and get all the items needed from same car a lot easier then trying to find bits all over. you will need all out of engine bay, fuel pump/sender unit in tank, pedals, the down pipe for exhuast. the main loom is the same and the plug for the diesel pump will be taped up by pedals.

:D £60 :D :D :D if your localish i will pay more a fair bit more, is it a 3 or 5 door?? i wouldnt pay out £1500 for a recon may aswel sell and get a diesel. lots of second hand engines around for about £500 but then same problems at a later date.

if you can get hold of a complete front end might be worth a go at convert but again lots of spanner work so think of man hours and cost will it be viable??

Look out for a rear ended freelander or suitable Rover car - then simply do an engine swap.

Remember that you freelander has plastic wings and a majority of aluminium panels which will remain tidy for another 10 years at least.

If my engine fails again, I will simply keep replacing as its much cheaper than buying a new or half decent used car!
