How easy is it to change the head gasket (td5 01)? man hours? Do I need to get the head cleaned, how do you go about this? Is this still the only option left open to me? as prev thread. I've filled the coolent back up, my car has now run for an hour, no signs of leaks, no white smoke, gauge on the mid level point. Could it be a faulty thermo???

I have not seen you other thread - but assuming its an overheating issue have you checked the stat?

I would before looking at the HG.

not sure about top hose, but will check....going down the stat change road first....I'll keep you posted.

slow down don,t go ripping the head off before checking out all the easy options. as previously stated check you,re stat out. then their,s also water pump to consider plus blocked rad etc, etc. also not seen you,re previous thread so what is the actual problem. usually if it,s head gasket symptons are pressurizing of cooling system, water in sump, coolant loss with no visible leak, hydraulicing on start up. etc,etc

Their easy mate i would certainly take one on at home. if you dont work in a garage. I would advise you change the exhaust manifold studs if you do th HG as they sometimes snap. Dan

Thanks mate! The issues although possibly unconnected is that after driving home the other night I got close to empty, filled up and 15 mins later had a loss of power, then 10 mins later noticed overheating, and coolent sprayed underneath the car. I then got towed home, noticed coolent was on empty and filled up and observed. No physical leak apears after refilling and observing for an hour, could it be that it came out from the overflow after a faulty sticking stat?, this is a double valve stat on the td5, so I have doubts.

would the head need scimming once removed before fitting? where? how? Thanks.

Before you go stripping your engine down take your vehicle for a short drive. I've been through what you're going through and mine WAS headgasket. I could run my engine all day with no overheating or pressurisation. A 1/4 mile drive would pressurise the top hose. Go for a quick drive and then check for leaks. At a guess I'm gonna guess that after a drive you will have coolant squirting out of your top hose. Your top hose goes in 4 directions. I rekon it'll be leaking from the underside of the the bit that goes to the top of the radiator. Check for signs of coolant venting from the expansion cap too.

The loss of power will be due to the engine getting too hot. Power should be restored until such time as it gets hot again. If it is losing power without being hot I would sling another temp sensor on cos mine eats em.
