Finally picked up my new toy yesterday. 240 mile trip home revealed a few minor things to sort out and a couple of big uns! I'll start seperate threads for them as I progress.
In the meantime I was having a poke around engine compartment this morning and found this bad boy.
I'm guessing it's part of the fuel enrichment process for cold starting... It appears to be not quite connnected.???
Any advice please?

OK. Found some new tubing the correct diameter and have put everything back as it ws. Only problem now is I can't for the life of me see where the vacuum tees off to?
I thought looking on t'interweb that it might tee off to the brake system but can't find anything. Any clues please chaps?

It sort-of T's off to the brake system.
From the T piece it should connect to a long piece of tube that comes around behind the engine ECU box (black box top/right of your picture). If the end isn't there somewhere, then maybe the piece of pipe has been removed. But it basically snakes across the firewall at the back of the engine and then goes through into the cabin behind the brake pedal. Once inside it connects to a plunger switch on the brake pedal (separate to the brake light switch).

The the brake pedal is released the plunger holds a vacuum and lets the cruise control operate. When the brake pedal is depressed it dumps the vacuum and signals the the cruise ECU that the brakes have been pressed via an internal switch.

Perfect Marty. Thanks. I shall have alook in the week. Certainly couldn't see any strays floating around anywhere but....... Opticians on Friday, if you get my drift :rolleyes:

I know the feeling about opticians.. I need to make an appointment and get my eyes checked again as it's been a few years now!

It could be that it's come adrift previously and someone has just cut it off or tucked it away somewhere. I think when I re-ran mine it worked out about 1.5m I used in total and if goes through the firewall somewhere near the ABS modulator block.

I'm going to be getting re-acquainted with the area as I've got a water leak into the vehicle somewhere on the RHS... Though I have a funny feeling that it's from either the front sunroof drain or the top of the windscreen and running down the pillar... That will be on my list to investigate tomorrow!

Or the pollen filter housing, A/C drains or the dreaded heater O rings
 
Ahhh... the 'usual suspects!'.... don't think it's any of them this time.
O-Rings - found coolant signs (and soaked foam underlay in drivers footwell) when I first got it 4 years ago. Went to do O-rings and found that they were nearly new already, but there was a chip in the plastic on the heater core side - so did the swap out to the Audi heater core then. Been leak free ever since, and it's definitely fresh water and over on the outer side of the vehicle rather than transmission tunnel.
A/C drains - A/C doesn't work properly - I think there's a slow leak, so it's usually run with the A/C off. When I had the A/C working I cleared the drains and trimmed the end of the rubber NRV to stop them getting silted up.
Pollen Filter Housings: Had all of that apart after the missus mentioned getting a drip on her foot about 4 months ago. Stripped it all back and then cleaned it all and re-sealed it with silicone at every point on reassembly. I will be checking these though just in case I missed a bit!

I will be going all over them again though just to be sure!
 
I'm so looking forward to doing all these things..... Not all at once though. ;) Having reliable cars where nothing goes wrong is fine, but very boring. :)
 
I noted that my cruise control vacuum tubing was perished and I will be replacing it once I have got my headlining finished, (just got the piller covers to finish off now)!

Just need to find a supplier who can provide 2 to 3 metres of vacuum tubing at a reasonable price and not £5 for a pre packed metre!

Also need to remove and clean my steering wheel switches!

And, straight back to the thread, do all P38's have the Vacuum Pump as per the picture in Martin H's original thread as I can't recall seeing one next to the Cruise Control Bellows!!

Just been out to the car, (in my wife's bright red dressing gown as I just got out of the shower), and noted that there is a smallish 4"x 4" square plastic box in the extreme right hand corner, just behind the bellows, with two plastic tubes coming out of the top!

Nothing like Martin H's picture!!

Yes they all have the pump.....not usually mounted next to the bellows mind!

Not 100% as I may be confusing the Classic, but it is either mounted on the bulkhead behind the EAS box or on the wing behind the headlamp....

Apologies for the delay - due to a combination of work and heavy cold, (man flu)!

That plastic box, is attached to the bigger box underneath it.
It is the Charcoal canister for the EVAPS emissions system. It stores fuel vapour, and then the ECU purges it in to the inlet manifold. It's designed to keep fumes from the tank down, and make the emissions system as efficient as possible.

On GEMS Petrol models (as you have) it's situated there. On Bosch/Thor models, the canister is mounted under the body, just in front of the fuel tank, as the Motronic ECU lives in a box there.

It's not connected to the cruise control system at all - that's all the gubbins in between the charcoal canister and the EAS box. You can just see the vacuum pump underneath the bracket that the bellows are mounted to.

Many thanks for your prompt response - much appreciated.

One of my next jobs will be the replacement of perished vacuum lines, cleaning of the steering wheel buttons in order t see if I can get my cruise control working again.

Obviously one of the first ports of call will be the vacuum pump to check that it is working, (I am presuming that it is electric), otherwise all other effort will be pointless!

Not use to separate vacuum pumps - all my previous vehicles, (large or smal), used vacuum created in the inlet manifold, (although not good for Carburation when leaks occur)!
