hi new to this , can some one help please i have a freelander 1 03 td4 , the engine run rough on idle and smokes ,i have had all new injectors fitted ,new fuel rail , new inlet manifold new injector wiring harness, and all hi and low fuel pumps are working as they should , now i am stuck , and one got any ideas.

many thanks

After replacing all of that I’m going to assume you checked the EGR isn’t blocked or faulty ,MAF sensor is working alright ,MAP sensor isn’t blocked or faulty and the turbo is ok?

hi thanks for the reply EGR all cleaned out and have no fault codes , its runs over 200rpms fine but smokes whitey smoke and smells a bit like dev to .

me thinking that , ok me just looked i i dont think i have clean the map sensor , me thinking the boost sensor was it silly me , ok can some please tell where it is as i can;t find it .
many thanks again

If in front of the engine bay it's on the front left hand side of the inlet manifold if you mean the MAP sensor.

Sorry a couple more a suggestions have you checked the crank case filter and air filter mine didn’t look like they had been changed for a while when I got it that help mine poor running and smoke or after all that work could just someone left a loose hose or split one.

Mine exhibited same symptoms as yours when the HP pump was leaking at the seals. Doesn't show a fault code - hard to test for - check for external leaks but mine was blowing fuel straight into crankcase and vehicle was running on with key off !!! Bit scary. Have a cloth ready to push into air inlet to stall engine in case your does the same !

new fuel rail , new inlet manifold new injector wiring harness

Those are odd things to replace - is there a story to this?

Sounds like lack of, or mis-measured, airflow. Is the EGR stuck open? Have you tried disconnecting the vacuum supply to it?

Unplug MAF test?

Crankcase breather filter?

Mouse nest in the air intake path?

Otherwise, a proper live data scan might be needed, by someone who knows what to look for.

thank you for all your help lots to think about and have a go , i let you know in a few days how i got on .
thank you all for your help

hi all ok update strip all down again cleaned all sensors put new Injector in started her up still running like pants but she did try and run right ever so often so i took her down the road with no loss off power but loads of smoke and when i got back on tick over she was just the same running like a dog , so looked for any faults but none showing , so me thinking it must be fuel so can any tell me if the fuel pressures are ok low pressure supply is 351.70 high pressure rail is 28658.84 KPA OH AND MAIIFOLD pressure is 102.40 kpa, so dont know if good or bad now ,also i had a look at the pump thats in the tank and found a pipe been rubbing so i moved it and snapped it off so now i have to buy a new pump just my luck .lol
many thanks

The rough running at idle suggests an injector, although you did say they’re new. What if you unplug the injectors one at a time, and see which one doesn’t affect the running - this will be the faulty one.

Leakback test also an option.

hi thank you for your reply ok have done that and find that they all make it change a bit apart from last 1 on the right as you look at the engine makes it real run rough , so maybe you got me thinking now could it be the returns not working right ?

The injector unplug test normally makes the engine run rough as buggery as you unplug each one. Your result suggests there might be three bad ones.

Did you pay for four new ones to be fitted? Might be time to visit a diesel specialist and consider a claim if so.

hi all ok done a compression test to day and found No 1 has under 200 and the rest are at 400 so i think it may of drop a valve ?

A leaking valve or piston rings by the sounds of it. Put a few ml of oil in the plug hole and run the test again. If the compression inproves, then it's the rings. If there's not appreciable increase, then it's the valves at fault.
