Hi everyone, I have just joined the forum and was hoping that someone could help with a strange noise my Freelander makes! When you start the car, it makes a loud whining noise, which sounds like it is coming from around the pedal area. It also makes the same noise when the traction control light comes on.
I can't believe it is normal, as it is quite loud!
Thanks, Liz :D

Hi Liz,

A common whining noise shortly after starting is the fuel burning heater if you've got one fitted (a small metal exhaust pipe just in front of the nearside front wheel is the tell tale sign of one being fitted). This normally sounds more like its coming from the passenger footwell though (unless your FL is LHD). Its meant to start automatically to help the engine/heater warm up when the outside temp is <5c but I think mine kicks in a little warmer than that.

I've got no idea why this should coincide with the traction control light - unless its very cold and the road is therefore slippy!

i've only ever heard a similar noise once when the rear fuel pump packed in
, when i switched on the ignition I could hear a noise like you discribe from the accelerator peddle (throttle position indicator) sounded like a stranded whale !! and the pitch varied with the position of the throttle ..

I know this dunt help. .. i only posted it so folks dunt think yer mad:D ;)

You ought to get a quiet whine when you switch the ignition on but before you start the engine - it'll be things like ABS and fuel pumps and shiny boxes of tricks.

What are you doing to get the TC light to come on?

Cheers

Turn the stereo up! my missus swears by it.... the only time the car gets a problem is when I happen to drive it after a week of driving around in a astra van!:p
