help with lift pump please

Could someone please help me out. I fitted a new lift pump to my 300tdi yesterday and when I started her up it sounded OK at first but after 20-30 seconds the idle noise changed dramatically and the engine started to shake and sound really bad, the engine won't rev but remains running?

The only thing I wasn't happy with in fitting the new pump was I couldn't get all the old gasket completely off, this wouldn't make a difference would it apart from the possibility of loosig a little oil?

Any help in diagnosing the fault would be much appreciated, ta.
 
So are you saying you have fitted one and it dose it? Or are you saying it was doing it before??

Also check sediment trap and change fuel filter are other prime points to look at
 
Ok have you fitted the lift pump pumping bar above the cam not under it?

As you inserted it to bolt it down did the top end stick out or did the bottom end push out?

Withdraw it and check the arm for defect and if in sure take a pic and post it on here. If its damaged in any way don't use it is my advice.

It's the only thing I can think of hope it helps

Thanks, just got home from work myself so of course it's dark now just to add to the frustration !! When I fitted the pump I had to push down slightly to align the bolts, I thought I felt some resistance, I can't remember if the top or bottom stuck out though, sorry.

The only other thing I thought today whilst at work was that after fitting the new pump I just started the engine, should I have primed it with the little lever first? Sorry to ask so many questions but I thought I read these engines were self purging? Just wondering if I've got some air in somehow.

Whoops! Problem sorted...feel a bit of a prat though now, turns out I put the fuel pipes on the wrong way around. I got home from work and even with a dim torch I could see what I'd done wrong, just shows what a sleep and a fresh day can do!

There seems to be a bad batch of pumps out there! The Delphi pump which did not look very old, on my 300 TDi was faulty. It would blow but not suck. (I found this out after getting filthy cleaning out the sedimenter bowl) A new pump was ordered. With this pump jets of fuel could be made to spurt from the fuel filter bleed screw when the hand lever was operated. A test drive was then taken and there was more power but on the way back the kangaroo effect returned. Next the injectors were removed and tested but all were OK. It was later discovered that the new pump was not pumping after just two or three miles. OK it only cost about fifteen quid but that is not cheap at all when it goes belly-up on its first run. There is also the consequential loss caused by a boat that is stuck in a £98 a month marina and STILL NO RELIABLE 4X4 to move it. Perhaps its time to cut my losses on LR junk and buy something else?
