I know that sounds like a daft question but I'm trying to fit new glow plugs to a friend's Freelander TD4 (2001).

I've taken the big flat plastic cover off the top of the engine expecting them to be obvious and accessible (like every other diesel engine I've seen). Either I'm going blind or they're hiding on purpose :)

I don't want to randomly start taking bits off unnecessarily.... particularly as I'm doing it by torchlight in the rain!

Reason I'm doing it is because the thing won't start when it's warm. Cold starts are no problem just if you leave it to cool for 30 mins - an hour after being at normal temp.

I hope it's the plugs..... otherwise I have read it might be the cam sensor (?)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Graham

can't see it being glow plugs if it wont start when warm, the job of a glow plug is to warm the cylinder in cold weather to make starting easier, when its warm you shouldn't need to wait for the glow light to go out, more likely a sensor. check your engine oil is full. my wife has a vw polo and if the oil isnt full to the max it wont start once the engine is warm. hope this helps ;)

agreed.
its highly unlikely to be the glow plugs. no need for them for warm/hot starts.

that's what I thought initially. but after looking at several threads on this and other forums the same prob has been cured by replacing them and foolishly I thought it would be a quick and easy (and cheapish) thing to do to rule them out. The AA bloke who came out today also suggested the glow plugs, but I'm not reading too much into that.

However I've found a thread elsewhere that says to replace them all you need to remove the fuel pump and LR quote a 10 hour book time on it with quotes of £600+

How could anyone come up with a design whereby a service item takes 10 hours??

Anyway..... as it appears that this is not as simple as I first thought.....

Any suggestions of which sensors to check first.... and does anyone have any details of the normal voltages / resistances of them? Or do I need to try and find a Haynes?

Thanks for your help.

Graham

Any manutacturer that wants its dealers to be rich!

To change the cam belt on some of the Fiat engines you need to remove the engine from the engine bay!

I've just searched through LR RAVE system and cannot find any details of how to change the glow plugs, or even where they are located for the Td4 - and this is supposed to be Land Rovers official tech docs! Only mechanical info I can find are the torque specs. Weird! Sorry I can't help.

Matt.

 what's the world coming to when someone has to resort to a Haynes to sort out a problem with a Land Rover!

re the fiat engine/belt prob. on one off the citroen gs thingys, it was quicker to take the engine out to change the points!
on the citroen 2cv, you take the front wings off to change the brake shoes!

all designed by a commitee no doubt?

Hi geetee, you will find the glow plugs on the inlet side of the head, they are fitted between the inlet valves and have a cable off the top of each one.

Hello matthew maddock, you'll find reference to the glow plugs on page 12-1-19 under gasket cylinder head manual models on the rave disc, it's a bit obscure maybe thats why LR techs have so much trouble.
