Hi all yep I'm the new boy, And was wondering
if I could pick your brains? I've got a 2000 X reg
2.5 V6 auto that's started making a knocking or
tapping noise. If you where standing in front of
the car with the bonnet open.The noise seems to
be coming from the N/S rear of the engine bay.
A little back ground on the car 36K one previous
owner FSH I've changed the oil and filter and now
I'm stumped? Any help or advice common faults
ect please. Cheers in advance.

Sounds like the "Vis" valves - maybe just the motors, but they get clogged in oily gunge and then dont work very well - or at all. The vis valves are variable inlet valves which sit inside the inlet manifold and, so i believe, alter the airflow within the manifold depending on load etc. They are driven by two motors controlled by a control unit (ECU?). the inlet manifold has a feed from an oil breather. this oil clogs up the manifold and motors and then the system stops working or the motors burn out.Typical symptoms are a rattle from the inlet chamber. Best bet is to get a new chamber from a Rover 75 - Same system, but cheaper. There is a mod to fit an oil catchment tank. details on the mg-rover.org forum, to reduce this in future.

More help needed please, I took your advice and pulled the
plastic inlet plenum off and found that the rod that controls
the six butterflies is broken off two of them. Any idea how
much a new one is ie the hole unit or is there any thing else
can be done.
