Driving home just now, heard a funny kind of whine when I accelerated (as I got faster it got higher in pitch) then a weird crunchy noise underneath and then no power at all. It revs up no problem and goes between the gears but will not pull at all. Had to push it onto a hill to roll it down to my parents home. A few weeks ago it popped out of high gears and left me struggling to put it back in but I don't think it's that. If anyone has any ideas please let me know so I won't be up all night bricking it.

Thanks in advance.

Is that a big/expensive job? This will have to go to the garage as it's way out of my league. I can replace one or two little things and i'm handy at changing lightbulbs lol. How long does it normally take for that kind of job if that's what it is as i'm knackered without transport :-(

Thanks in advance for the help by the way.

Sound like a diff has failed, easy way to check is to get someone to run it in first gear while you have a look underneath,if one of the propshafts is spinning then that will be the axle affected,be bloody careful doing this though and don't touch anything thats spinning,if the props are'nt turning then your fault lies elsewhere

2002? not sure if you'll even have the difflock internals in the transfer box to activate by manually turning the spigot - that way it would be able to move by powering the good axle, not that I would recommend driving it like that, only to move it around to a better spot to work on it. However, that would only be if the internals were in the transfer box.

Do as Henry suggests to find out which axle is gone.... unless it's the transfer box itself (neither propshaft turning)!

Ok, I have absolutely no mechanical awareness about things like this so it's gone into a local garage where they know their stuff when it comes to Landys. Unfortunately, when growing up, instead of being in the garage with my two brothers learning about engines and **** I was in my bedroom learning useless things about computers. So let this be a lesson to any youngster reading this now, get off the PC/Mac/Smartphone and get in the garage, it'll serve you much better believe me!

Thanks anyway chaps, it's much appreciated. At least i didn't look a complete t**t when talking to the guy in the garage.

Ok, apparently the transfer box had been bodged to last for a short time to absolve the guy I bought it off of any blame. My mechanic Nick said it had been taken out within the last few weeks as it was all cleaned up nice and tidy. He said something about a (shaft maybe?) being covered with foil or a sleeve to allow it to fit and work where it had come loose but it would inevitably wear out sooner rather than later and stop it working which is what happened. I'm about to buy a replacement one off eBay for £200 odd and it will delivered by thursday lunchtime allowing the garage to fix mine ready to have back for Friday afternoon so happy days. Probs looking at a bill of around £350 - £400 in full which I can live with. Thanks to everyone for their input, it's greatly appreciated. God bless you.

Just had the transfer box delivered, £260 with next day delivery from Morgans Autosalvage i9n Guisborough. Seems like a decent bloke who knew his stuff and has 100% positive feedback from almost 3000 sales so fingers crossed it'll be ok. I'd like to thank everyone for their advice etc, it's very much appreciated. It's not until you are Disco'less do you realise how much you love them and hate ordinary cars.

Plus 1 on that !!!

I'm not joking, my dad has lent me his Mercedes to use in the meantime and i'd take my Disco over it any day of the week. Finished work today and ready to do the deliveries for my wifes laundry business and whereas it normally all fits in the Disco we had to make three trips in the Merc. I hate cars

Arrgghhh the curse strikes again. Had the transfer box fitted but the low gears don't work. Do I try and get some money back on the box as I won't use low gears (only very light off roading and snow use) or do I insist on a replacement?

what happens when you try? has the linkage not come undone?

(ah d2, i don't know about them :) )

The mechanic who put the box in for me said low gears just won't work. He's grown up with Landy's and knows his stuff. He said it's fine if I don't need to use low gears which I doubt I will to be honest. Just need to weigh up what to do as i'm screwed without transport :-(

Not doing the job it's supposed to do - get a refund or insist on a replacement; get that sent first before you remove the faulty one. Mind you, I would have thought that it may have been possible to check the transfer box operation BEFORE it was bolted in??
