Help on Tyres...?

Hi Folks,

I've got a nice 2.0 D '98 Freelander with 17" wheels with Kumho escta 225/55/r17 boots. (Very Urbanish fat tyres!)
They're starting to look a bit worn and I would like to replace them with a more 'AT' tyre. (Road and a bit off roady)

However I'm struggling to find anything that will do the job at a half decent price. Also could I change the tyre width or profile without causing a problem?

Any advice would be grateful

Generally, a FL with 17's will only really work with pretty low profile tyres which means that AT options will be pretty limited. Most 17" AT tyres are designed with bigger vehicles in mind.

Whether you can change the tyre width will depdn on the design of you wheel but it is unlikely you will find an appropriate tyre. You can change the profile but this will increase the overall wheel size and will affect your speedo and could foul your wheels on the car.

I think the easiest thing for you to do is choose either the 17" road wheel look are change the wheels altogether for 16"s with AT tyres.

I've just had a set of Pirelli scorpions on . £110 a piece at Charlie Browns. No really AT tyres but I think they are slightly better off road than the Michellins.

Saying that I got stuck yesterday in some mud - so probably not that great of road - but excellent road handling. My older Pirellis seems to hold up better in the mud.

As said - really need 16" for the AT options, but I suppose it depends on where you spend most of your time.

Can recommend Colway A/T's. Just bought a pair of 17's for my new alloys. Available in 225/55 R17 for £47 per corner from Tyres Direct - Home

Have run a full set on a Disco 2 - 10K on and still plenty of tread left. (Estimate 30K)

have u got the 17inch trekk alloys and would those colways fit them because have been wanting some ATs for my alloys too but i dont know much about the sizing

Looks like i need to weigh up either 17" road tyres or change to 16" rims with a more off road set up.

Not sure what type of wheel i've got but i took a picture ...17" 3 spokey design...

Marcus,

They fit perfectly as they are the same size as manufacturer spec. I do have 17" Trek Alloys. The A/T act as a road tyre (on road) with large areas of contact and deep tread. Stick with 225/55 R17 for easy fitment and no rubbing.

When you venture off road you can drive through some very sticky stuff and the traction control does not even flinch.

Can positively recommend as much cheaper than £130 per corner for pirelli or Michelin.

Plenty on ebay... you could get a set of 16's and fit A/T tyres or simply keep your 17's and change your tyres. I guess it depemds on what condition your alloys are in and what you use the vehicle for.

I dont really need A/T, but they are reasonable and I am off to school summer camp again, so may be needed if the weather is poor.

Final point from me. If you are considering Colway, then get them while you can. It seems they went out of business last year (shame as I have been very impressed with the tyres and prices).

The previously listed website is still listing and stocking the tyres at reasonable prices. (Paid £260 all in for 5x 255/55 R18 A/T in Oct last year) - so many people have commented on them and can't believe the price. LR dealer was convinced they were BFG (well they are similar)

I reckon they will be back (happened before), but just in case have got tyres 'in stock' to keep me going.

Thanks for the infomation, a great help.

Use the Freelander mainly to get to and from work, but would love to get off road some time, soon, the Colway AT's may be my best bet.

I think so ive tried calling all day long no sucess so ive done a Naughty Thing i went out and brought a Land Rover Defender with a New Set of tyres So im sorted now and can have some fun
