Help Needed

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for some guidance and advice. My husband a huge Land Rover enthusiast passed away in 2020 and left behind his 1971 Series II - Safari edition Land Rover which he had been restoring. I have had it serviced and a new fuel tank and brake cylinder fitted in the last few weeks to keep it on the road and running. To be honest He doesn't get the attention he deserves and I am now in the position where I need to move house and won't have the space for him, so Sadly I need to sell him. I don't really know a lot about cars (it was my hubbies passion) so I'm not really sure how much he is worth. Could anyone point me in the direction of someone who could value him / where would be the best place to advertise and sell him.

Welcome to LZ. Very sorry to hear about the death of your husband!



A few minor points. I think that is a late Series 2a, or maybe a Series 3.
There is no such thing as a "Safari edition."
Safari was a term used by some owners for Land Rovers with a tropical roof and windows in the back. As far as I know, the term was never used by the Rover company themselves.

That is an 88" Soft Top.

Values? I don't really like trying to value old vehicles, because people never like what you tell them.
Garages rarely give good valuations, because they will often have customers waiting for vehicles, and want to buy at a good price.
Specialist valuation is expensive, and not always much better.
One thing you could do is try and arrange agreed value insurance for as much as you can get the insurers to agree to. You may have to ring around, not all companies offer this service. But insurers usually have a better idea of what a vehicle might be worth than garages.
None of these have been sold new for around 40 years, so that is no guide.
You could try and put a post in the Series section on the forum, see if anyone wants to stick their neck out.

For selling the vehicle, I would recommend LRO magazine classifieds. It is free, and the ad will appear on their website as well as in the magazine.
Aim for a bit higher than what you think. Series are selling very well at the moment. It is easier to come down on price than to increase it if someone bites your hand off.

Couple of things I forgot.
That really does look like an excellent example. If I wanted one, I would consider coming up to look at that myself.
But I don't, I have too much on, and my car is fine for my needs.

But do not undersell, that has got to be worth over 15k. Maybe more.

Also, make sure it is on Historic Vehicle Registration, which makes it exempt from all the restrictions on vehicle use which are appearing all over the country.

Turboman, Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your candor and understand that with these vehicles they are sometimes worth what someone is willing to pay more than the book value. I had considered storing it for my son but he is 6' 6" tall and probably a foot too tall to drive it comfortably. I have been hanging on for sentimentality more than anything and he is really lovely to look at (not the easiest to drive - but being used to power stearing has a lot to answer for!) What is Historic Vehicle Registration? I know I don't pay road tax but I wasn't aware I had to do anything else?

They aren't comfortable. I am 6 foot one or therabouts, and driving them has ruined my back.
No power steering isn't really a problem, you just have to get used to it.
When I started driving, there were very few cars on the road in Britain that had power steering. Only a few very large or very expensive cars.
You just have to learn to drive like we did back then.

Historic Vehicle Reg. If you don't pay road tax, and it is not SORNed, you have it already.
It also means exemption from MOT Testing, and exemption from London ULEZ and LEZ, which will appear in some form or other in all urban areas in Britain within the next 5 years.

Hi, welcome to the forum, sorry to hear of the circumstances.
That is a very nice example of a series Landrover.
You could advertise it via Car and Classic online or put it in a specialist auction. Selling Land Rovers privately is often an unpleasant minefield experience.

Have a chat with Matthewsons from bangers and cash TV show. They are based in Thornton le Dale. They're seem to regular obtain for a fair price.

I would say the looks like a nice example of a series 3 short wheel base soft top.
As previously said, 'Safari' refers to a 'second' roof skin over a regular hard top, it provides an air gap to help keep it cool when it's warm and sunny.
