Hi All new here ! Am trying to help a colleague with a 1984 90 2.5NA .
Problems began before christmas when the first real cold came here, it would not start and turned over very slowly . the owner fitted a new battery but still same issue I tried a bigger battery and it spun over quicker but after a few days still an issue . Glow plug light not working so the owner replaced glow plugs with Bosch but glow plug light still didnt come on ( unless strangely you connect another battery with jump leads when it was fine ) battery checked all ok its a 336 a huge battery speced for early RR diesel . I swapped bulbs but old bulb fine we found starter lead from solenoid to starter case was melyed slightly so replaced starter the starter we got was tiny compared with our one even though MF said was correct so took numbers off old one and reordered got correct huge starter! starting is better but still slow and black/ grey smoke on startup ?
what is the glow plug wiring circuit like and where can I find and test relays and timers are there any common issues ? I am wondering if an underlying fault on this circuit has been over straining old battery and starter as both were shot anyway .
Talking to him he now says the glowplug light has not worked for ages but he thought it was the bulb!

Where to look next help greatly appreciated together with locations of relays etc.
thanks
steve

there wont be a timer, its a case of holding the key in the glow position for probably upto 20 - 30 secs, so with a tester just check your getting power to each glow plug

there is no timer/relay for glow plugs pre 200Tdi - the high current feed is direct from the ignition switch - you might want to check that the plugs do visually get RED hot when using the feed from the ignition as it's prone to fail

if it has failed a simply on/off switch will do for the plugs - or wire in a standard timer/relay

also sounds like your earths and starter feeds all need a good clean and possible replacement

Thanks guys so what does the orange light do and why does it only come on when a 2nd battery is connected? I take it if there is no timer it does not go out either? just trying to get my head around it!
have cleaned earths if I pop the glowplugs out and earth on the block they should glow when ign swithched on? if they dont then there is a feed wire from the ign switch or I could run a new feed via a relay with a dash switch or a timer unit? take it they are high amps?
thanks again

If its turning over slowly then sounds like a problem with the starter or power to it. You need a fairly good speed to get the compression up (or gas will leak past worn rings). check the state of the cables to the starter (including the earthing straps), clean the battery terminaly, and if all else fails get a new starter motor.

Hi My heater plug light doesn't come on at all and the landrover Tdi 90 wont start but it turns over healthy. I have changed fuses, relay's and still no go??

Bulb blow ? But being serious have you put a meter between the glow plug and the body to check you are getting power to them? The tdi should start without the plugs being heated unless it's very cold where you are.

but don't forget that having 12v across them doesn't mean they'll be getting HOT
