Rave is on the computer at home and I'm in Walmart parking lot. How do I get to the linkage? From underneath or through the console?

On a P38 from above or possibly below depending on where the linkage has failed. Is it an auto?

Got it home by crawling underneath and manually putting it into drive.

Sorry, but it sounds like you will need to go under to the point where the cable connects to the selector arm on the box and move the lever into drive.
Engine off of course.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the damn thing out. Rave is no help.
IIRC, the cable is adjustable at the GB end, and fixed within the selector ... It has been a while since I changed one, and I remember the selector is awkward to get out of the car ... I think it has to come to bits to change the cable too...
I have a spare selector which I could photograph if it would help ... let me know .....

Right, inside the vehicle the changer sits on a plate pop rivetted to the tunnel - with the actual changer bolted to it - you can see the pop rivets and the SS bolts in my pic ( off a project
) below.... ( gear knob is held on by a c-clip under the cover, and then the nut hold the knob on .... )---

So, under the plastic cover, this is what you'll find ... cable obviously at the bottom on this pic ....
Inside the changer itself:-
So, the cable outer is held into the body by the "red" clip ... and the cable inner in to the mechanism by the "green" clip ....
