Help lost drive on way to carfest…

Evening all

After some help. Currently waiting for break down service just off M6 avoid 60 miles from Wigan (our Overnight stop).

We lost drive after an intermittent screech which sounded axel related but was hoping to nurse it to Wigan and deal with in the morning without wife and kids in the car.

She drives with diff lock on but nothing without. Handbrake only works with diff lock on as well so figure it’s the rear axel. Beyond that not sure.

Questions
- anyone got a recommendation of a garage in/near Wigan that would be able to help?
- could I just remove the rear propshaft and handbreak and drive carefully to Winchester and back to Edinburgh?
- any other pointer that could help us on our way?

Hard to say.
When in gear and difflock off which propshaft is spinning ?

If it is the rear then you could (possibly) drive on with that shaft removed (in diff lock), however i'd get it checked 'out as soon as' to determine what has failed.
You may be able to figure it out if you can get one wheel off the ground but i'd still like to get the damage repaired rather than drive to Winchester and back.

Bathgate was our original departure point .

Got to over night hotel in Wigan and had a couple of hours sleep.

Worked out its most likely the passenger side rear half shaft. Popped the centres off the wheels and the dust cap had been pushed off and mangled. Half shaft can now be pulled back and forth by fingers.

Need to now find a garage that can help at super short notice to get us back on the road.

Any suggestions for Wigan area much apriciated. Short of that I may try to get the hubs off and pull both half’s and drive on.

You should be able to get a 1/2 shaft from somewhere ... and some oil for the diff .....

How did you get on ?
