Help ive bought a freelander

Hi guys.
Ive boughta freelander 1 02 reg
1.8 petrol.
In very good shape but currently needs mot so got it cheaply.
Known issues are handbrake light can come on whilst driving yet handbrake fully off.
Also yep u guessed it ive got the 3 amigos. Could these be related?
Could anyone advise me on a process to sort these things.

Check the brake fluid level first.

If that's OK, pop it into a Landie workshop for the diagnostic codes to be read.

Ive done that check all correct.
How do i locate a local diagnostic workshop?
Whats a rough cost mate?

IIRC when I've had the codes read, the local Landie garage charged me about £20. I've used them twice and both times it was the modulator, so it saved me faffing around with brake switches and sensors, just replaced the modulator.

Having said that, although mine is a early '99 model, I did try a generic reader on it and although it couldn't communicate with he engine, it did talk to the ABS - which surprised me. So if you know someone with a code reader, it might be worth plugging it in. Don't bother with the cheap ELM dongle jobbies as I think they only try to talk to the engine, you need a device that will try the ABS.

Another resource is the Rave documentation which is a downloadable workshop manual from Land Rover. It describes the possible reasons for the various combinations of brake/ABS warning lights...

Handbrake light illuminating... I would have a look at the switch by the handbrake to see if it's operating ok and the wiring is happy.

Welcome aboard!

Agree with the responses from the others, but the three amigos is frequently a wheel sensor or brake sensor fault. A diagnostic will take the guesswork out of the equation

Lord Hippo forgive my ignorance but where and how will i find this handbrake switch please?
Also can u advise how to get to and check switch under gear lever for 3 amigos purposes

The handbrake switch is on the hand brake lever - you'll have to probably take the center cover/console off to get to it - you can check the gravity sensor as described above then as well.

What switch are you looking for under the gear lever? There are none. There is HDC switch on the gear lever, IIRC this isn't a clever switch with any self test capability - if the wire's fallen off it (which happens) the only problem that causes is that you can't turn on HDC.

A quick Google of Land Rover Redditch found a number of LR related workshops in your area. I'd give them a call to see if they have diagnostics for the ABS on an 02 reg Freelander and how much they charge - then pick one and get the codes read.

If you come back with the codes and description, people can help tell you what they mean.

While you're ringing round you could save yourself some time for future reference and ask how much they charge for a head gasket change!
