I need to replace the adjustable rod that is connected at one end to the steering box drop arm, and the other end to the N/S wheel. Is this the track rod tube or tie rod tube?
Defender TD5
Both look the same on the pictures. I would guess it’s the track rod tube.

Yes, they are giving it the wrong name, Tie rod is the usual name for the part of a steering rack that goes from the fixed part to the wheel.

Also found them called cross rods:eek::) how many names can you call a piece of tube

ANR2860 seems to be the number I keep seeing though.

But all the track rods with 2 ball joints are called the same. So I guess we can agree you don’t want that:)

So it would seem tie rod is “their” description.

Thanks for the replies. All l need to do now is get the old one off.
Someone has tightened it hard up against the end of the threads at the drop arm end and l can’t shift it.
Stillsons are the only tool l have that will grip it but they are only about 10” long and it wouldn’t budge with the effort l was able to put in.

Tomorrow l will attach my 24” breaker bar to the Stillsons and see if that provides enough leverage.
I take it the ball joint will survive this amount of abuse?
The other end of the rod (at the wheel) was tight but unscrewed fine.
The drop arm end looks like a reverse thread so it will unscrew clockwise.

Yes left Hand.
Beat around the threaded area with tool #1 against the vice, and plus gas to help.
Good luck

If you are replacing the tube anyway, heat the end up slowly. If this fails, 2 small slits with a 1mm cutting disc on a grinder will get it off, just try not to cut the piece you want to keep.

Well, the 24” breaker bar did the trick, the bar had been screwed right to the end of the thread so l unscrewed it four turns and then took the ball joint out at the wheel end and tightened it eight turns to compensate.

No need to buy a new steering arm now.
Thanks for all the advice!
