My 2003 td5 defender 90 has developed a real problem with the clutch
over the last couple of weeks the pedal has started to get lower and lower until now Ii can hardly engage gears, I have checked the fluid level thats Ok and both master and slave cylinders look clean and dry, the only other symtom I have had, it used to squeal on cold mornings when first
started up, The mileage is only 28000 miles, surely it cannot be a clutch or
release bearing problem. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I suspect the pedal return spring has snapped off, and the pedal isn't coming all the way back up. Because of that it will not re-fill with fluid properly, as it should do EVERY time the pedal is released. This causes the pedal to sink lower and lower just as you describe. Basically, it doesn't "self reset" as it should, and as all hydraulics like brakes should do.

Get a torch and stick your head in and see if the spring has unhooked or broken. It's a coil spring about half an inch diameter and maybe four inches long - unless they changed the design!

The pedal MUST have a strong enough spring attached to heave it all the way up.

If the spring IS there, then perhaps the clutch pedal is seized on the shaft - but I doubt this.

Let us know!
