Hi

What engine do you have?

Sounds like starter motor is without power, disconnected or faulty earthing. Occasionally the starter will click once if stuck.

not aware of any immobiliser problems in freelanders

2.6 diesel??? wasnt aware of that engine in a Freelander.
2litre L-series and TD4 were the engine specifications of older models, 1.8 and 2.5 petrol.

Freelander2 has 2.2 diesel and 3.2 petrol

Should also have mentioned most obvious point of checking fuses for starter motor/immobiliser

Right - I think its the starter motor I have tapped it and its starting again - YEAHH !!!

Do you think it will need a new one ? or will it go for a while

Are they difficult to replace ?

Thanks Again

Good result!
At least you know wots up now and how to sort it for a while, keep a hammer handy, till you can find a replacement.

i saw a couple on fle-bay a few weeks ago, went for sensible prices.
dunno if theres any on at the moment.

No probs, good you are mobile again. Negative terminal (push fit connector) must have been loose if a simple tap was the cure.

Engine rocking and off roading can loosen them up. Would see how it goes for a while might be a one off, replacing them is a two bolt job plus connections. Air housing will need to be removed for access to it.

Keep err lit!

For those interested www.racemettleltd.co.uk do new/recon starters/alternators, pricey but good engineering and light weight products

 Interesting thread, daughter has borrowed my spare 420 sdi Rover and had exactly the same problem, same engine in that. The fix was the same but I have been told that the starters sometimes get full of clutch dust which makes the pre engagement sticky, so taking it off and a good clean may help.
