Help! Don't know what to do. Had offer for my disco - do I accept?

I love my land rover and it grieves me to say that it has been off the road for a while. Someone has made me an offer and I can't make up my mind whether it is worth accepting or not.

I know that it needs work on it but is it worth me doing it or selling to someone who is willing to do it up?

What do I need to think about?

R reg, 130k on clock, Tdi GS and I have been offered £700

Can someone help me think this through?

What work does it need and are you capable of doing it / can afford to have it done?

I paid that money for a M reg 300tdi so that seems cheap to me for a R reg but I don't know what needs doing.

I dont think id let it go for under £850, but obviously, it depends on the amount of work needed!

It needs a bit of welding. the speedo is not working properly. One Front lens needs replacing and probably a few other bits and pieces to get it through the mot. At least one new tyre.

I haven't got the money to do it and can't do it myself but I know that I will have the money soon - question is would I be better selling this one and then buying another one when I do have the money

Do you want to end up with a Landy?

If yes then what is it going to cost to put yours right compared to what you'll get for 700 quid?

Anyone know what that will cost and what that R reg will be worth all done and with 12 months ticket?

You could buy another for the 700 you get and still end up with one that needs loads of welding /work.

Is the rest of the car sound?

@skires - rest of car is sound. The only thing I am nervous about is that it has been sat on the side of the road for a while and actually remembered that as a result the battery is flat too.

With it not being used for a few months, I am worried about the unknown and unseen things.

Ideally I would love to continue with landrovers - I love them but I might have to set my sights lower until my finances improve

I've always wanted a Land Rover and I bought mine a year ago. I love it. However I've found that running a truck that I got for under 1,000 quid that is 18 years old means it's going to need work. Especially a truck that has a rep of rusting in places so badly.

I have learned that if I am going to keep one on the road I am going to have to learn how to do most of the work myself. Mine will need welding on sills for next MOT so I'm even thinking of learning how to weld myself.

I think if you don't have the tools/know how to do most of the familiar jobs yourself or a healthy budget to pay garages to do them you will be constantly burdened by the demands of your truck.

I'm sorry but unless you know of a local Landy owner or group that can help/support you when things go wrong I'd seriously think of selling and getting something else. That's not saying that other under 1k cars won't ever go wrong ... but most won't have the welding needs.

If you are going to sell then I'd see if they will up their offer as that 700 may well be a first, and hopeful offer. Others may be able to give you a better evaluation.

Well I have accepted his offer. He is hoping to collect it either later today - or Saturday. Strange that this should happen today when it is my birthday tomorrow!!

I could weep.

I now realise just how much I love it and I need to look to getting another one as soon as I can.

If you are going to get another then why not ask the good folk on here if there is someone near you who can go with you to have a look at any you are interested in so they can maybe help you get one that will need little work.

You've made the right decision. Better to shift it on for some cash than leave it sitting on your drive rotting away. When your finances improve buy yourself another one and enjoy it!
