Currently trying to accurately date my Defender 90. When I recently ordered some spares from Paddock's online the chap who I spoke to was 100% sure it's a pre 1985 model after I'd given him the chassis number, however when I checked for myself online it comes back with and estimated build date of March 1986. I'd like to know for sure as it'll soon need road taxing and as I understand it if it is pre 1985 I don't have to tax it as it'll be classed as a classic car.

Cheers for any help.

Have you been on a blind date🤭 seriously though near the dumbbells at front of the driver's wheel arch should be stamped the vin number. Also pending when the vehicle was released by Landrover production line and registration. Might say 85 but released by Landrover on 86 according to the v5 document.

This is where the confusion is creeping in as the VIN when I check online is giving me an estimated production date of March 1986 but the chap at Paddocks is 100% sure that the "AA" letters in the middle of the VIN number means it's a pre 1985 build.

Edit to add ; Just checked with John Cradock Land Rover and Rimmer Bros and they both say the VIN is definately pre 1985.

Might be the supply of parts from 1984 onwards for ninety as the one tens came out in 1983. The stage one V8 was virtually the same as the one ten so the part manuals covered 1983 to 1989. Does your MOT documents tally and service records have vin number correct.
You never know with Landrover the chassis original but didn't get released till later.

Just been on to Land Rover UK and they say with that VIN it is a 1986 build so if anyone is an authority on them it must be them so that's the one I'm going to go on for road tax purposes.

You need to buy a FULL heritage certificate from the British Motor Museum. That will tell you for sure and DVLA will amend your log book.
